The Indians knew exactly what had to happen last week for them to take over second place in the Los Gatos Little League major division—they had to sweep the Giants, and they had to hope for the Yankees to lose a game.
Turns out, things went even better than the Indians had hoped.
The Indians swept to pass the Giants in the division standings. But the Yanks didn't just lose—they were swept by the first-place Braves, giving the Indians sole ownership of the No. 2 spot in the standings.
The Indians beat the Giants 7-4 and 9-6 to improve to 9-3 for the year. The Giants slipped back into third place at 8-4 with the two losses, and the Yanks fell into a fourth-place tie at 7-5. The Braves top the pack at 13-0.
The Indians battled back from a 4-3 deficit with a four-run rally in the fourth to beat the Giants 7-4 on Wednesday. Singles by Clayton Susick and Marc Tonkel set the table for Nathan Burke's three-run home run. The Indians added an insurance run in the inning when Chris Bitter doubled and scored on a hit by Jake Tonkel.
Bitter had belted a two-run single earlier in the game. Susick, M. Tonkel and J. Tonkel each finished with two hits.
Burke tossed two innings of scoreless relief to get the save in the game.
Hank Hanson singled and doubled twice for the Giants, including a three-run double in the third to drive home Brian Rose (single), Kiko Alonso (walk) and Matt Walleen (walk).
The decision left the clubs tied for second place in the division, but the Indians broke the tie with a 9-6 win on Saturday.
It was a seven-run Indians' rally in the second that was the difference in the game. A double by Susick and singles by Bitter, Burke, Anthony Cumbra and Scotty Ryvola sparked the rally. Ryvola came back with a two-run single in the sixth. Bitter and Susick also had two hits apiece in the win.
Alonso singled and doubled, Brian Rose ripped two run-scoring singles, Matt Horton doubled and Walleen cracked a run-scoring single for the Giants.
The Braves maintained their winning ways with three victories last week.
Steven Zavodnick and Nick Hirschman helped the Braves start the week out right by teaming to toss a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Yankees. Zavodnick struck out six and walked one over the first three innings and Hirschman fanned seven and walked one over the finals three.
Zavodnick led the bat attack with three doubles to drive in four runs and Kyle Johnson had two hits.
The Yanks, who had entered the week hot in that second-place race, were swept by the Braves, losing 7-2 on Saturday. Hirschman singled and doubled to drive in three runs and Alex Horton drilled a two-run double to spark a four-run rally in the first for the Braves.
Johnson and Zavodnick each doubled in the win and Justin Lewis belted a run-scoring triple.
Nathan Aguiar had three hits for the Yankees and Alex Silva singled and doubled. Kevin Murphy singled home a run in the loss.
The Braves came back after the win over the Yanks to beat the Tigers 10-2. Hirschman and Johnson had three hits apiece in the win and Zavodnick had two hits.
Billy Cardia and Jon Williams had two hits each for the Tigers.
The Tigers and Reds split a pair of games last week. The Tigers beat the Reds 13-3 on Tuesday, but the Reds came back to top the Tigers 13-7 two days later.
Geo Shannon had two its and struck out five in two innings of mound work to lead the Tigers to the 13-3 win to open the week. Jeffrey Clark and Matty Calhoun also pitched two innings each in the win.
Brian Comstock homered in the game for the Reds.
Todd Ericson fired a complete game for the Reds in the win on Thursday. Jason Shepardson doubled twice and singled to drive in six runs and Travis Bonner doubled twice to plate three.
Shannon ripped a solo homer in the third and Cardia doubled in the sixth to drive in Williams, Alex Fernando and Mikey Mitchell—all aboard on singles.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, beat the A's twice, winning 7-5 on Wednesday and 5-2 on Saturday.
A triple by Colin Chapman and singles by Tim Garvey and Geoffrey Cleveland sparked a three-run first-inning rally and the Sox went on from there to nail the 7-5 win to open the week.
Peter Heng had two hits for the A's.
Chapman ripped two doubles, including a run-scoring double in the seventh, to lead the Red Sox to a 5-2 win over the A's. Cleveland had two hits in the game and Ryan McGee doubled. Stephen Hight came on in relief in the seventh to pick up the save.
Kevin Peth belted a two-run homer for the A's and Heng and Drew Martig had three hits apiece.
In the only other game last week, the Cubs beat the Cardinals 12-2.
