Foley tosses Orioles to 6-0
Los Gatos Pony League win
By Dick Sparrer
It was a rocky start for the Orioles in the Los Gatos Pony League this spring. But, oh, how times have changed for the O's.

The Orioles blanked the Cubs 6-0 and beat the Giants 8-6 last week to push their season record to 5-4. The two victories stretched their current win streak to five games after opening the year with four straight losses.

Bricklin Foley tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Orioles past the Cubs last week. Foley struck out 12 and walked just two in the win.

It was a five-run rally in the second that sparked the O's to the victory, and the rally started with two out and nobody on base. Kevin Arroyo singled home a run and, after two runs scored when Foley reached on an error, Riley Curran tripled home two runs.

C.J. Olsen and Geoff Doss each had hits for the Cubs.

Foley clubbed a two-run double and Curran tripled home a run to lead the Orioles to an 8-6 win over the Giants earlier in the week. Kevin Angelesco doubled for the O's.

Arroyo had two hits in the win and also came on in relief to claim the mound win.

Mike McCarthy singled and doubled for the Giants.

The Giants battled back from the Wednesday loss to beat the A's 7-4 on Friday and shut out the A's 10-0 in five innings on Saturday.

Kevin Connelly went the distance to flip the shutout against the A's over the weekend. The 13-year-old hurler struck out four, walked just one and gave up three hits.

Karl Winkelman led the Giants at the plate with three hits, including a two-run double in the third. Raymond Salazar also had three hits in the win.

Mikey Denevi, Greg Walters and Eric McDonald each singled for the A's.

Salazar ripped a two run single to spark a three-run rally in the fifth and Michael Shawhan's two-run single keyed a four-run rally in the sixth to lead the Giants to a 7-4 win over the A's on Friday.

Salazar nailed the mound win with three innings of shut out relief, giving up just one hit and fanning three. Tim Sweeney retired the side one-two-three in the seventh to get the save.

Steve Garvey's two-run single in the third was the big hit for the A's. McDonald tossed a complete game in the loss, striking out six, walking three and allowing five hits. McDonald blanked the Giants over the first four innings.

The A's had posted their first win of the year earlier in the week, beating the Red Sox 4-2. Austin Steacy tossed a complete game for the win, striking out eight and walking just one while flipping a five-hitter.

The Sox scored a couple of unearned runs in the first to take the early lead, but the A's chipped away. Garvey tripled and scored on a ground out by Steacy in the second, then the A's scored twice in the third to take the lead. Nick Kalpine tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Honda. McDonald, who had two hits in the game, reached on an error, stole both second and third and scored the go-ahead run on a ground out by Greg Walters.

The A's added an insurance run in the seventh when Kalpine reached on a two-base error and scored on a single by Honda.

Robbie Roesser threw six-plus strong innings, but was tagged with the loss.

In other Pony action, the Astros cruised to two very different victories last week. The Astros blanked the Cubs 1-0 before coming back to blast the Yankees 16-6.

The Astros and Cubs were locked in a scoreless tie through six innings before a run in the bottom of the seventh clinched the win for the Astros. Kevin Wyllie opened the inning with a single and he raced home on a two-out single by Bryan Johnson.

Wyllie gave up just one hit and struck out seven in five scoreless innings on the hill, but it was Greg Lopez picking up the win with two innings on shutout relief. He walked two, struck out one and gave up no hits. The Cubs never advanced a runner past second base in the game.

David Martini took a no-hitter into the seventh before giving up the singles to Wyllie and Johnson. He struck out nine, walked two and hit one batter.

Wyllie was perfect through four innings for the Astros before Olsen singled to break up his no-hit bid.

Colby Moore had two hits to knock in three runs, Cole Meleyco singled and double and Wesley Howell had two hits to lead the Astros past the Yanks 16-6.

The Yankees lost a 10-9 heartbreaker to the Cubs on Thursday. Martini ripped a solo homer in the sixth and also singled in the win. He went the distance to flip a nine-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four. Alexander Power tripled and scored twice in the win and K.C. Silva singled and walked.

Will Kapp had three hits and scored three runs for the Yanks and Mitchell Benedetti tripled and singled twice to drive in five runs.

Matt Ellis tossed a two-hit shutout and had three hits to lead the Cardinals to a 10-0 win over the Astros. Ellis struck out nine and walked just one as he blanked the Astros. He doubled and singled twice to lead the offense.

Robby Comeau walked twice, was hit by a pitch and stole three bases in the win and Nathan DaSilva walked three times, was hit by a pitch and had two steals.

Los Gatos Pony League standings (as of May 10): National League—Cardinals 8-1, Giants 8-3, Astros 5-4, Cubs 3-5; American League—Orioles 5-4, Yankees 5-5, Red Sox 3-6, A's 1-9.
