He may have been entered in freestyle events and not the butterfly, but Brian Williams of Los Gatos was flying none-the-less when he competed in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division swimming championships.
Williams flew to wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, posting Central Coast Section qualifying times in the process.
Williams will be one of a handful of Los Gatos swimmers who will advance to the Central Coast Section swimming and diving championships set for this week at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.
Williams and Gatos diver Katie Lampe enter the CCS trials and finals after winning league titles at the De Anza meet on May 2. Lampe was a champion in the girls 1-meter diving event.
Lampe will be in action again on May 15 when the CCS girls diving trials and finals are held at Santa Clara International. The boys diving trials and finals are May 14 at the same complex.
The swimmers will take over on Friday and Saturday. The preliminaries are set for May 16 with the championship finals on May 17, 1 p.m.
Williams enters the CCS meet as a league double-winner. He flew to a win in the 200-yard free in 1:46.02 and added another win in the 500 free in 4:44.07.
Brian Rose was close behind Williams in the 500 at the league meet. Rose was second in 4:50.79, also a CCS qualifying time. Rose was also sixth in the 200 individual medley in a CCS qualifying time of 2:05.44.
Los Gatos was fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:30.39 and sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.43, both CCS qualifiers, and Austin Nichols ended up 11th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.57. The Wildcats ended up seventh in the team standings at the league meet.
The girls, though, finished fourth overall behind the efforts of Lampe, Gabriella Hdez, Kelsey Hunter and Catherine Eastman.
Lampe ran up 415.25 points to win the diving event and qualify for CCS.
Eastman, Hunter and Hdez placed in two events each, all with CCS qualifying times.
Eastman was second in the 500 free in 5:08.49, with Hunter third in 5:09.26 and Hdez fifth in 5:15.26.
Hdez was fourth in the 200 free in 1:56.80, with Hunter fifth in 1:57.19 and Eastman seventh in 2:00.30. Alyssa Uno was 13th in the 200 in 2:06.84 and eighth in the 100 free in 59.21.
Jacqui Duzac finished fifth in the 50 free with a CCS qualifying time of 26.26, with Becca Stein 10th in 27.09. Duzac was also 10th in the 100 back in 1:07.66, with Kristen Chang 15th in 1:12.45, and Taryn Hunter was seventh in the 100 fly in 1:05.00, with Stein 10th in 1:05.82, and Hunter was also 13th in the 100 free in 1:00.09. Katie Sweeney was 12th in the 100 breast in 1:14.51.
The Gatos girls qualified three relay teams for CCS. They were fourth in the 200 free relay in 1:46.22, fifth in the 400 free in 3:53.99 and sixth in the 200 medley in 1:59.62.
