Being a bonehead won't be such a bad thing when 107.7 DJ Steven Seaweed strolls through town to host his mid-morning show.
As part of a hometown tour of Bone DJs, the station will be stopping in Los Gatos at Willow Street Wood-Fired Pizza on May 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Seaweed will set up camp at the restaurant for his five-hour show, which will feature prominent Los Gatans spliced between Led Zeppelin tunes and prize giveaways. Guests will include the owners of Summit Bicycles, Jan Hutchins, Terri Hope and Mike Wasserman, among others.
"We want to get the flavor of the town," says marketing director Janet Magleby. "It's basically a five-hour commercial for Los Gatos. It is a beautiful town. When I think of a Bone hometown, it's a place that comes to mind because it's such a homey town."
The idea started cooking in January, when the marketing team was looking for a way to give back to its listeners.
"Everyone always wants their favorite radio station to visit their hometown," Magleby says. "After we do the six DJ hometowns, we are throwing it to the listeners so they can vote for their hometown on the website." Essentially, people who present the most enticing proposals will nab a chance to play leader in their hometown with 107.7 for a Chamber of Commerce day. "Our goal, at the end of the broadcast, is that if I'm from Los Gatos and listening, I think, 'They did my hometown right. It's the people I know about and read about,' " Magleby says. "It's what they find rewarding in their community."
The tours will continue through summer, but for now the station is gearing up for the Los Gatos show, which in addition to guest spots and possible appearances by the Los Gatos and Saratoga high school bands, will feature a slew of concert tickets, CDs, T-shirts and keychains.
Hosting the show at Willow Street Pizza was an easy choice for Seaweed, as it is his favorite restaurant. Seaweed says the restaurants in Los Gatos are among the best attractions in the town, as are the bike trails.
Seaweed has lived in Los Gatos for the past 30 years but grew up in San Jose and Saratoga, graduating from Saratoga High School in 1963.
Seaweed hopes the Los Gatos event will draw several hundred listeners. "It's a way to reach out to the community," he says. "We are a big-city radio station, yet most of our listeners are in the suburbs, so it's good to get out there."
