A Los Gatos soccer coach is back in custody after violating a judge's orders and maintaining the relationship with a teenage girl that landed him in jail in the first place.
Jason Hemmes, 45, was taken back into custody and his original bail revoked when it was recently discovered that he was communicating with the 15-year-old girl. Police had found the two together in March; Hemmes faces two counts of child molestation for his activities with the girl and is expected to answer to those charges at a May 27 preliminary hearing.
According to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker, on April 9 a judge had expressly prohibited any further contact between the two. But the girl's father recently found records on the computer that printed out to be 150 to 200 pages' worth of Internet chats.
"The guy's seriously obsessed with the girl," Baker said. "He continues to maintain this romantic relationship."
In addition to the online chats, Baker said there had also been phone calls between Hemmes and the girl, facilitated by Hemmes' friend.
As a result, Hemmes' bail is now at $500,000.
Hemmes, who coached a Los Gatos United Soccer League team on which the girl was a player, has also been charged with child molestation of another underage girl. The second girl was under 14 in early 2000, when she was in contact with Hemmes. Baker said there is no evidence that Hemmes has communicated with the girl.
Married and father to two teenage daughters, Hemmes' residence is in San Jose. He works from home.
The preliminary trial—during which the judge will decide whether the case will proceed to formal trial—is scheduled for May 27 at 8:30 a.m. in Dept. 23 of the county courthouse. Anyone with additional information on Hemmes or the case is asked to call Det. Guy Kuyat at 408.808.4500.
