Teenage girls testify against a former youth soccer coach
By Gloria I. Wang
Two teenage girls recently took the stand to testify on child molestation charges filed against a Los Gatos soccer coach.

Both girls spoke of inappropriate actions on the part of Jason Hemmes, a 45-year-old man who coached in the Los Gatos United Soccer League.

According to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker, Hemmes was "held to answer on all felony charges" at the May 28 preliminary trial. The presiding judge gave the go-ahead for the case to proceed to formal trial; a trial date will be set on June 9.

The three felony charges were two counts of lewd conduct on a child of 14 or 15 and one charge of a lewd act on a child under 14.

Jane Doe One, a 15-year-old player on the team, was found in a parked car with Hemmes in March. At the hearing, she testified about her "romantic relationship" with Hemmes and said the relationship had become romantic in November, Baker said. Hemmes was taken back into police custody last month—having posted his original bail—when Jane Doe One's father found evidence that Hemmes had violated court orders and persisted in contacting the victim, on the phone and over the Internet.

Hemmes is also on trial on charges of a lewd act "that had occurred while on a church camping trip" in 2000, Baker said. Jane Doe Two, who was under 14 at the time, did not appear in court but was represented by a deputy. According to Baker, Hemmes had chaperoned Los Gatos Holy Cross Lutheran Church's youth trip.

A second teenage girl spoke at the hearing. The 16-year-old, a member of a league soccer team, talked about sexual comments that Hemmes had allegedly made to herself and another girl, as well as a hand motion that he had made causing a girl's bikini to fall off.

Baker said at the start of the preliminary trial that the defense attorney had tried to lower the bail. "After the preliminary hearing, they withdrew the motion," Baker said. As a result, Hemmes remains in custody.

Although the case is proceeding to trial, Baker said the investigation is by no means over. "If other crimes are discovered, we can certainly file those charges separately," he said.
