NEW RESTAURANT: Twin brothers Curtis and Russel Valdez, culinary academy and LGHS grads, are opening their own restaurant, called Seven, at 754 The Alameda on June 16.
The identical twins, 30, grew up with a healthy appreciation of food and cooking by helping their mother in the kitchen. While in high school they worked as busboys at Steamers. After graduation, they headed off to Hawaii to surf and gain more culinary experiences.
Then they decided to go to the California Culinary Academy, and both graduated from the academy in '94. After that training, Curtis landed work in such restaurants as Roy's in Maui, A.P. Stump's in San Jose, Cafe Trio in Los Gatos and Aubergine in Newport Beach. These last two had the biggest impact on his career.
Russel also worked at Roy's and A.P. Stump's, and his résumé includes stints at Lark Creek Inn in San Mateo, One Market in San Francisco and 71 Saint Peter in San Jose. Working with Mark Tabak at 71 Saint Peter may have prepared him best for running his first restaurant, Russel says.
Curtis is the more flamboyant one; Russel the more practical. Curtis is the older one. In fact, he claims his mother wasn't expecting twins, so Russel's arrival was a complete surprise. The two work well in tandem, even to the point of completing each other's sentences—and each other's sauces.
The general manager of Seven is Hugh Parker, the twins' brother-in-law, who is married to their sister, Adrianna. Parker, 35, is also a Los Gatos High School grad. He graduated from USC in '92 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
ALTERNATIVE MEDS: The new Integrative and Wellness Medical Center is up and running on the first floor of Mission Oaks Hospital. IWMC is the dream of veteran doctors Gerald Trobough and Jan Winetz.
Both doctors wanted to incorporate alternative treatments with traditional ones and provide preventative programs as well.
The integrative programs will provide acupuncture, therapeutic massage, guided imagery, meditation, hypnotherapy, reiki, yoga, tai chi, and qi gong. The wellness programs will focus on preventative practice, identifying medical risks and screening for chronic illnesses.
KERFUL BIRTHDAY: Marian Stoops, former owner of Kerful Laundry, marked her 91st birthday with a celebration at the Saratoga Adult Day Care Center recently. It was also the birthday of her niece, Rebecca Yates, who threw the party.
Marian and her husband, James, ran Kerful Laundry, originally across from Los Gatos High, for more than 45 years. James, now deceased, was town treasurer for 18 years and served a term on the town council as well. Today, under new owners, there are two Kerful Laundry branches—one on Roberts Road in Los Gatos, one in Saratoga.
Yates intends to donate many of the Stoops' artifacts, including the original Kerful sign, to the Los Gatos History Museum. Yates herself is well-known in town, having worked in the clerk's office and for the rec department for 15 years before her retirement last year.
REUNION IN THE HILLS: For those who attended Burrell, Hester Creek, Highland and Summit schools up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it's reunion time again on July 19. The setting will be the redwood grove of Bill and Susan Radonich, with a chicken and ribs barbecue from noon until ...
Cost is $13.50 per person, and June 15 is the deadline to RSVP. Checks should be made out to Burrell School Reunion and sent to Bob Wilson, 1842 Simpson Way, San Jose, 95125. His number is 408.265.1750. Reunion committee members are Warren Davis, Andy and Bill Radonich, and Don and Bob Wilson.
SWEET PEA SIGHTING: There's a solid hillside of pink and white sweet peas on Linda Vista, thanks to the dedicated service of birds. The original plant that produced all these Italian, long-stem offspring came from hardworking birds, too, with a sweet pea vine established in the front yard of Lorraine and John Blackburn.
That was six years ago, and since then the plants have outdone themselves, seeding and reseeding, and are not only beautiful but very aromatic, report the Blackburns. The location is off Overlook, but Lorraine will give directions if needed for a drive-by. Call 408.354,1279.
SEGWAY SEGUE: Seen zipping around town recently, specifically in the Van Meter School section of Los Gatos Boulevard, was famed resident Steve Wozniak. But it wasn't the sight of Wozniak that elicited the interest—it was his vehicle choice. He was riding a Segway Human Transporter.
Several locals seem to have picked up on this newest marvel, and what with tech leaders using it, can commonplace occurrences be far behind?
