Youths attend medical forum in Washington

Los Gatos residents Andi Kleissner and Cassondra Prow are in Washington, D.C. this week, attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. The forum, which started June 22 and ends July 1, introduces high school students to public health, medical ethics, research and general practice. Students will visit medical facilities and participate in problem-based learning in diagnosing fictional patients; they will also interact with professionals from the medical field.

Kleissner is enrolled in Castilleja School and Prow is a student at Los Gatos High School.


Rec department public speaking and debate camp

To develop public speaking and debate skills in students, the Los Gatos­Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation is holding weeklong camps in July. Intro to Debate courses will be held from July 7 to 11, and Intro to Public Speaking classes the week of July 14. Each week of camp costs $295 and takes place at Los Gatos High School. Penner receives grant to intern in Ukraine

Los Gatos resident Douglas Penner has been awarded a Phi Kappa Phi grant to intern at the US-Ukraine Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Ukraine. Penner, a 2001 graduate of Los Gatos High School, attends the University of Mississippi and will participate in the internship overseas for one semester. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awarded a total of $40,000 for 40 students.
