With a track record of service to the community, the Los Gatos Lions Club has honored high school seniors who have done the same.

As part of the Los Gatos High School Senior Awards Evening on June 4, the Lions presented $12,000 in scholarships to 11 graduating seniors who serve the community in their respective subjects of interest.

The main scholarship, the $2,000 Simonson Award, went to Ryan Daily. Like retired Los Gatos High Principal Ted Simonson, Daily showed leadership and community involvement in his years at the school.

Awards of $1,000 each were presented to 10 other students: the Wedemeyer Awards for Athletics to Derek Tam and Carolyn Penner; Language Arts Awards to Felix Li and Karen Rossmassler; Performing Arts Awards to Jason McDowell-Green and Heather Corini; Science and Technology Awards to John Ballard and Lauren Metzler; and Community Service Scholarships to Holden Groves and Rebecca Norman.

The Lions started awarding scholarships in 1982 with a Bruce Jenner Athletic Scholarship. That scholarship was later renamed after Los Gatos High coach Charlie Wedemeyer and his wife, Lucy; the other awards and scholarships were gradually added on through the years. The Simonson Award began in 1998, the year that Simonson, a member of the Lions, retired from the high school.
