Big spring for Los Gatos sports teams

It was quite a spring for the sports teams at Los Gatos High School. The Wildcats won Santa Clara Valley Athletic League titles in girls track and volleyball, won a Central Coast Section championship in boys tennis and sent teams to the CCS playoffs in baseball, softball and volleyball.

So when it came time to select the SCVAL all-league squads in the three team sports, it was no surprise to find the Wildcats reaping many of the awards.

In volleyball, the awards seemed to play out just like the regular season did for Los Gatos. The Wildcats, who finished 12-0 to win the De Anza Division championship, came away with the majority of all-league honors.

Volleyball

Shaun Sullivan walked off with the league's most valuable player award after a sensational senior season for the Cats. Fletcher Anderson and Casey Pfeifer earned all-league first team honors, and Sam Moisenco won a place on the all-league second team.

Like the varsity, the Los Gatos junior varsity team won the title in the SCVAL's De Anza Division. Rob Couchee was picked the division's most valuable player and Cody Stewart and Brian Register were all-league first team selections. Eric Rowell and Frank Fritsch were named to the second team.

Baseball

The Los Gatos baseball team still had plenty to boast about despite being ousted from the CCS Division II playoffs in the semi-finals.

Gatos catcher Travis Howell, who hit .489 and blasted six home runs during the season, was named the co-most valuable player of the De Anza Division.

Pitcher Alex Rollin and outfielder Derek Tam were named to the all-league first team. Rollin racked up seven wins and 70 strikeouts for the Wildcats, and Tam contributed with 19 hits and 16 runs scored.

Infielder Dan Politi was also honored with a place on the all-league second team.

Softball

The Los Gatos softball team had equal success with its postseason recognition. Shortstop Virginia Fritsch was named the De Anza Division's most valuable offensive player, while pitcher Melissa Mullins and second baseman Kyrie Timbrook were selected to the all-league first team.

Centerfielder Camille Cardinale and catcher Katie Ferrara received all-league second team honors.
