Super season sets tone for future of Los Gatos tennis

The Los Gatos boys tennis team refused to quit.

When pitted against top-ranked Monta Vista in the Central Coast Section finals on May 15, the Wildcats' season hinged on Brent Fong and James Lok's doubles match. They trailed 5-2 in the deciding third set and were a match point away from being defeated. But the freshman and sophomore duo did not wilt. They fought off three match points and ended up coming back to win the final set 7-6 (7-2) to clinch the CCS team title.

"It was awesome to see the whole season come down to that," said head coach Todd Dissly. "[Fong and Lok] reached down and pulled out a miracle."

The Cats, who defeated Aragon and Bellarmine to earn a spot in the championship match, handed Monta Vista just its second loss of the season and snapped the Matadors' streak of six-straight team titles.

With their win, Los Gatos earned a spot in the Northern California championships at Stanford on May 23 and 24. There, they advanced to face the Menlo Knights in the NorCal finals after beating Monte Vista of Danville and Lowell.

Though Menlo clinched the team title by winning several matches to push the team score to a 4-2 advantage with only one point left to be had, Dissly believes Los Gatos' most telling moment came in the final singles match.

"We had already lost the [team competition], but Brian Brogan was still playing his match," said Dissly. "He could have just given up, but he didn't. And that shows what kind of character this team has."

Brogan dropped the first set to Menlo's David Oehm, but rallied back from a 4-1 deficit to win the second set. And even after Menlo wrapped up the team title, Brogan fought back to win the third set in a 15-13 tiebreaker.

The three-hour duel finally ended after Oehm held off 12 match points. Tournament officials said it was the closest match in the five-year history of the event.

Dissly hopes the team will be back at the NorCal finals next year, considering they lose only one senior—Will McAlister, who will attend Sacramento State on a partial scholarship.

McAlister qualified along with Brogan for the CCS individual championships.

The Wildcats' doubles team of Chase Huebner and Lee Gerston took the CCS crown in their competition by defeating Bellarmine 6-4 and 7-5 in the title match.

But all those accomplishments will be a distant memory when the young players take the court next year, and Dissly knows Los Gatos won't be content with just CCS titles.

"They tasted success," said Dissly, "and now they want to do everything they can to win NorCal next year."
