The road to San Francisco travels through San Jose—at least it has for many members of the San Francisco Giants.
Many of the major leaguers who call Pac Bell Park home spent some time playing for the San Jose Giants in the Class A California League at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
And a few of them, including Joe Nathan and Chad Zerbe, will return to San Jose on July 19 to support their former minor league club at the San Jose Giants' 11th annual fundraising banquet.
Current Giants Nathan, Zerbe, Jesse Foppert, Yorvit Torrealba, Jerome Williams, Kurt Ainsworth and Marvin Benard will join manager Felipe Alou as special guests at the banquet to be held at Lou's Village, 1465 San Carlos St. in San Jose.
Former Giants stars Mark Gardener, Vida Blue and Jim Davenport are also among the invited guests, along with Giants coach Ron Wotus, a former San Jose Giants manager.
The evening's special guest will be former San Jose manager Duane Espy, now the hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies. Espy managed the San Jose club in 1988 and '89, and will be in town that weekend when the Rockies meet the Giants in a three-game set at Pac Bell.
The cost for the banquet is $50 per person (special rates available for children), and proceeds support San Jose Giants players with housing costs, food and emergencies. The event begins with no-host cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
