Town council back in session after break

The Los Gatos Town Council resumes work on Aug. 4 following a monthlong recess. That night, the council will consider Akeena Solar's application to install unscreened solar panels on its building, a request that had been denied by the planning commission. The council will also hold public hearings on a brush and weed abatement program and a request to modify a use permit for Transilvania, a new restaurant opening at 330 N. Santa Cruz Ave. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the council chambers.


Volunteers are needed to staff Sunset homes

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is looking for volunteers to staff a Sunset Idea House. The foundation will receive a five-figure donation from Sunset Magazine if it honors its commitment of providing volunteers during the house tours. Volunteers are needed each Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the length of the program (Aug. 8 through Oct. 5). The money will go toward the foundation's work in the research, education, screening and treatment of breast cancer. Los Gatos High alumni reunite in September

The Los Gatos High School New Millennium Foundation will host its alumni reunion weekend Sept. 19­21. Things will kick off Sept. 19 with a football game at which former athletes will be recognized. The graduates of Los Gatos High will then be treated to a tour of the school Sept. 20. NMF will host an auction at 2 p.m. that Saturday at the Opera House, and there will be a picnic at Oak Meadow on Sept. 21.


Murawski on dean's list at Wheaton

Mattia Murawski, a sophomore at Wheaton College, was named to the school's fall 2002 dean's list. Murawski, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley J. Murawski, is a resident of Los Gatos but graduated from Loyola Academy.


High school students earn 'distinction'

Phil Nielsen, president of the board of trustees for the Los Gatos­Saratoga Joint Union High School District, has announced that 352 students at Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools were recognized as "scholars of distinction" for the spring semester of the 2002­03 school year, earning a 4.0 grade point average or better.


Courtesy Chevrolet donates van to Nova

Rebecca Roulette, owner of Courtesy Chevrolet in San Jose, recently donated a 12-passenger 2001 Chevrolet van to the Nova Alternative Education Program in the Los Gatos­Saratoga Joint Union High School District. The donation will be used to transport students to museums, cultural events, community service functions and other extracurricular activities. The Nova Alternative Education Program is operated by the district.
