Staff at local hotel, eatery showed courtesy

I would like to thank the three young waiters at Kuleto's Restaurant for their concern and care while I attended dinner after the Opera in the Park concert.

I sustained a leg injury just before the concert began, and their help and the help of others made it possible for me to attend the dinner.

Kuleto's provided a memorable after-concert dinner in the lovely terraced area of Hotel Los Gatos. The buffet dinner was excellent, as was the cooperation and service of the entire staff.

A special thanks also to Hotel Los Gatos for being one of the Opera in the Park sponsors. In my opinion, the staffs of Kuleto's and Hotel Los Gatos are an asset to our town.

Town shouldn't complain about look of panels

I just saw Bud Lortz, Los Gatos director of community development, on the news. I can't believe he's complaining about how solar panels look.

Excuse me. I think the panels look better than the building they sit on. Has Mr. Lortz lost all common sense, or is he just trying to get in the news any way he can?

Where are the old oil wells in Los Gatos?

In the Aug. 7, 2000, issue of your newspaper, there was an article by Shari Kaplan describing a producing oil field in the orchards of Los Gatos.

I grew up in the Santa Clara Valley and to my surprise the oil wells described were almost over my grandmother's back fence. She and my dad, however, have no memory of the old pumps and other equipment.

I recently visited there and was unable to locate the "remnants" of an old well that were described in the article.

Have the remnants been removed since the article was written? Or did I just not know what to look for? (It seems there is no space for anything behind the service station and the corner of Los Gatos Boulevard and Garden Lane.)

Merchant saw women cutting town's roses

Last week I was on my way to a meeting in the Los Gatos Town Council chambers. I noticed two women cutting the roses in front of the chambers.

I got out of my van to speak with them, and they quickly walked away grinning with their bouquets. Our town planted these roses and other flowers and trees for the entire community to enjoy. I hope these women are enjoying our roses, because we are not.

Monte Sereno's Patriot Act vote questioned

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the "Patriot Act" resolution as recently passed by the Monte Sereno City Council.

While I believe that each council member can speak out on any issue as a private citizen, I do not believe they can speak as representatives of the citizens of Monte Sereno on issues that are not within their charter.

This is especially true when the passage of the resolution was not unanimous, indicating that some constituents may not support it.

Where is their voice in the matter?

Most disturbing is sending the resolution to various political and law enforcement groups.

Is the intent to encourage these groups to subvert the will of our elected representatives in Washington on these matters and thereby break the law and fail to perform their sworn duties?

Whatever time and effort went into introducing, debating, voting on and distributing this resolution was time and effort that was not spent doing the job the council members were elected to do.

I suggest we find council members who will concentrate on doing their job and not trying to countermand the will of Congress.

It makes you wonder how they would spend their time if elected to a state office.
