Mark your calendars for hats, hoopla and a tour through history as the Los Gatos High School All-Alumni Reunion Weekend, Sept. 1921, approaches.
The high school, celebrating its 115 th anniversary this year, will offer a variety of events for the entire family, co-sponsored by the Los Gatos High School Alumni Association and the New Millennium Foundation, said Sandy Spafford Moore, alumni association president.
Festivities kick off at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 with a barbecue at Johnny's Northside Grill, followed by the Alumni Recognition Football Game at 7 p.m. at Helm Field. After the game, alumni can jump and jive at the "Sock Hop" in the high-school gym, featuring performances by the newly formed Los Gatos dance team Paw de Chat, as well as a jukebox blasting tunes of the 100 greatest hits over the years.
Moore said alums can then mingle with the high school's past and present teachers over breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sept 20, with another appearance by Paw de Chat. Home-economics teacher Wendy Cosgrove and retired administrators Ted Simonson, Patti Hughes and Al Simon will be cooking the breakfast, which is free only for retired teachers.
Guided tours of the campus will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the New Millennium Foundation's third annual live and silent auction and fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Opera House, 140 W. Main St.
Joanne Rodgers, chairwoman of the foundation, said the auction started out as a way to entice alumni back to the school on the same day as the reunion, but now the event has grown so popular it has evolved to become an entire weekend of activities open to the general community, faculty, parents and students.
Thus far, Rodgers said, the New Millennium Foundation has given about $300,000 back to the high school and raised more than $50,000 with the auction last year.
"As usual, our community has been exceedingly generous," Rodgers said.
The theme of this year's auction is "Hats Off to Los Gatos High School." The reunion decorations will fit the theme with hats on display from people in the community such as Los Gatos Mayor Sandy Decker and Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Chief Scott Seaman.
Los Gatos High School Principal Trudy McCulloch still hasn't picked out her hat yet, but said she's excited for alumni to visit the campus with so much renovation and construction underway, including new pool facilities and the girl's locker room.
"It enriches the school and puts the alumni back in touch with the school," McCulloch said.
Reunions for the classes of 1948, 1958, 1963, 1973 and 1983 will be held at a variety of times throughout the day on Sept. 20. And on Sept. 21, the celebration continues with a picnic at Oak Meadow Park for alumni, friends and families from 11 a.m. until dusk.
Moore, who is from the class of 1963, said she has taken a personal interest in organizing the weekend because she wants to throw a party for everyone who has gone through the high school and continues to give back to the town.
