Mike Costanzo knew going into the 2003 golf season that his Los Gatos girls would have a good year—but this good?
The Wildcats are off to a 8-0 start in the '03 campaign, including wins over Aragon and Hillsdale at week at the Poplar Creek Golf Course.
"We're very excited at the prospect of this year's team," said Costanzo, who teams with Jim Marino to coach golf at the high school. "We're definitely shooting to win our league and compete for a CCS title."
Los Gatos finished second in the league behind Menlo-Atherton last year with a 10-2 record. M-A won the Central Coast Section title and Gatos wound up fifth in CCS.
Returning from that squad are top-flight seniors Jayne Pimental, Jackie Pimental and Melanie Supler along with talented juniors Allison Williams, Melanie Matsuo, Heather Arnold and Dani James.
Newcomer Monica Walker, a transfer from Germany, is another top prospect. Walker is just a sophomore.
The Cats stretched their season record to 8-0 with the 172-187 win over Aragon and the 172-239 win over Hillsdale last Thursday.
Los Gatos opened the year with two wins each over Menlo (184-198 and 183-215) and Mills (169-215 and 173-240) and a win apiece over Burlingame (169-183) and Piedmont Hills (180-231).
The Wildcats, currently 6-0 in league play, will be home for a league match against Aragon on Oct. 7, 3 p.m., at La Rinconada Country Club and will travel to Palo Alto Muni on Oct. 9, 3 p.m., to face defending league champion Menlo-Atherton.
