Los Gatos frosh-soph dominates 56-7 Homestead in league opener
By Nick Tuttle
For the second time in as many weeks, the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team smashed its opponent by beating Homestead 56-7 in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League DeAnza Division game.

The Wildcats scored in every conceivable way: on the ground, through the air, on a kick return and on a defensive safety.

Quarterback Danny Sullivan led the way with a 7 of 7 passing performance. The offensive line of Matt Nelson, Vikram Shivaji, Richard Gomez, Michael Tona and Brett Havens dominated the Homestead Mustangs throughout.

Coach Dale Gustafson remarked that his team had played well in all aspects of the game, but that in the next several weeks, as they get deeper into DeAnza Division play, he hopes the Wildcats will be ready to face tougher competition.

A.J. Comeau scored on a 24-yard run on the first play from scrimmage following a fumbled kickoff by the Mustangs. On the Wildcats' second possession, Will Kapp scored to culminate a five-play drive following a Sullivan to Marty Mullins pass that took the ball to the Homestead 11-yard line.

Next it was Michael Gault's turn. Following his own 47-yard punt return, Gault hauled in a Sullivan aerial, got a great block from tight end Carlos Alonzo, and went the final 25 yards to make the score 21-0 with 3:08 left in the first quarter. After big stops by the defense, led by Andrew Stanley and Carlos Alonzo, Gault scored again on a 47-yard run.

On the next possession, Shivaji threw a devastating block to spring Comeau for 34 yards to the 1-yard line, from where he scored on the next play.

On the next series the Mustangs made their first first down of the game. But after a holding penalty and pressure from the defense—namely Danny Foster—Homestead was flagged for a penalty in its endzone, resulting in a safety. Gault then proceeded to run the Mustang kickoff back for a touchdown, making the score 43-0 at half.

Kapp and Andrew Clark scored in the second half with Clark running 75 yards from scrimmage for the final score.
