Sparks sparks Panthers to win

Will Sparks had a big day, and because of it the Los Gatos Panthers rolled to a 28-6 Pop Warner Football win over the Redwood City 49ers.

Sparks ran for 110 yards, scored three touchdowns, kicked a field goal, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass to help the Panthers to the win that improved their season record to 4-1.

Joshua Ajlouni supported with 106 yards on the ground and he also scored a TD. Kyle Miller passed for 52 yards.

Anthony Frediani, Michael Spork, Carter Krach, Roscoe Koontz, Jake Boetcher, and Jermel Ladd were tackling leaders for the Panthers and Andrew Berg made a pair of touchdown-saving tackles.

The Tigers slipped to 2-3 for the season after suffering a tough 12-8 loss to the Bayside Broncos.

Cory McDowell carried 11 times for 54 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown run, and completed 2 of 4 passes for 20 yards, both to Evan Witty.

Ricky Hastie and Garrett Irizarry led the defensive effort with 11 tackles apiece, and Zack Marcus and Hayden Senter finished with 10 tackles each. Hastie, McDowell, Senter and Marcus were each in on quarterback sacks.

Adult tennis

The Los Gatos women's 2.5 team competed in the USA League Tennis Adult National Championships held over the Oct. 3­5 weekend in Palm Springs. Team members included Allison Pickering, Carol La Marre, Sheryl McCoy, Elizabeth Zientek, Milada Senna, Helen Stone, Mary Bergland, Linda Bostrom, Karen Thiel and Jill Bess of Los Gatos; Barbara Phipps, Lorelei Clement and Chandra Adkins of San Jose; Jackie Lytton of Redwood Estates; Jennie Kennedy of Cupertino; and Maria Sarver of Los Altos.

Golf tournament

The Autumn Chill Charity Classic golf tournament, hosted by Paul B. Newman of Intero Real Estate Services in Los Gatos, will be held Oct. 19 at the Summitpointe Golf Club in Milpitas.

The registration fee is $115 per player, and a box lunch will be provided for each golfer. Proceeds from the tourney benefit the Intero Foundation.

SCU golf tourney

The annual Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament will return to the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club on Oct. 24. A 12:30 p.m. shotgun start will follow a 10 a.m.­noon registration.

The entry fee for the best ball scramble tournament will be $220 ($235 after Oct. 8) and will include green fees, a golf cart, a photo with foursome, range balls, tee prizes, lunch and dinner. The cost for the dinner only is $65.
