Conner helps Cats 'breeze' to water polo win
By Dick Sparrer
Breezy Conner figured to be one of the top water polo players in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this fall.

Well, she'd certainly get no argument on that score from Lynbrook. Conner, a returning all-leaguer for the Wildcats, tossed in all four of her team's goals in a 4-3 win over the Vikings last week.

Despite the win, Los Gatos coach Ted Mathewson sees this as a "rebuilding year" for his squad, with Mountain View the division favorite.

"We're depending a lot on freshmen, sophomores and juniors," said Mathewson, who still figures his team for a second-place finish this season.

Among those underclassmen on the Gatos varsity is none other than Conner, the comeback all-leaguer.

"Our best player and team leader is Breezy Conner, a junior," said the coach.

Conner and senior Ana Graziosi are the only two varsity returners for Los Gatos this season.

Top freshmen in the Gatos pool, according to Mathewson, are Lisa Ratzliff, Emily Thomas and Rita Warkov.

The Los Gatos girls will be in the water for a pair of 3 p.m. games this week, visiting Fremont on Oct. 14 and Santa Clara on Oct. 16.

Boys water polo

The Los Gatos boys water polo team faces a busy week. The Wildcats will host Monta Vista on Oct. 15, 5:30 p.m., at West Valley College in Saratoga before heading south to take part in the Live Oak Tournament Oct. 1718 in Morgan Hill.

Coach Steve Spencer's Los Gatos squad is senior-heavy this fall with only junior Ben Johnson and sophomore Brian Rose breaking up the otherwise all senior roster. Tyler Scales, Andy Hight, Jake Fisher, Scott Silva, Nolan Verga, Robert Shamshoian, Jeff Mohr and Austin Nichols are all seniors on the squad.
