Mike Costanzo knew it was going to come down to Los Gatos and Menlo-Atherton in the race for the Peninsula Athletic League golf championship this fall.
After all, Costanzo's Wildcats finished second to M-A in the league race a year ago, and Menlo-Atherton went on to win the Central Coast Section championship in 2002. And with returning players on each squad this season, it promised to be more of the same.
It is. And in the first meeting between the two golf powers, Los Gatos came up a stroke short.
With two top players missing from the line-up, the Wildcats dropped a 200-201 heartbreaker to M-A last Thursday at the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course.
Jayne Pimental led the Los Gatos effort with a 12-over par 48 at Palo Alto Muni. Heather Arnold was a stroke back with a 49, followed by Melanie Matsuo at 51, Jackie Pimentel at 53 and Allison Williams at 54.
The Wildcats notched lower scores throughout the line-up earlier in the week in a 183-216 league win over Aragon at LaRinconada Country Club.
Jayne Pimental was again the Gatos leader with an 8-over par 44. A stroke back was Dani James at 45.
Jackie Pimental and Arnold each carded a 47 for the Cats and Melanie Supler shot a 48. Monika Walker was close behind with a 50.
The Wildcats, now 9-1 for the year, were to host Burlingame on Monday at LaRinconada and will race Piedmont Hills on Oct. 14, 3:30 p.m., at San Jose Country Club. The Cats close out the dual match season on Oct. 20 against Hillsdale at LaRinconada, 3 p.m.
