To celebrate the end of this year's streetscape work in downtown Los Gatos, the town is encouraging Santa Cruz Avenue merchants to help make the area "sparkle" by arranging to have their awnings cleaned while the town provides free window and sidewalk cleanings.
Complimentary window and sidewalk cleanings were offered last year as well. What's new is that merchants this year can take advantage of a group discount rate to have their awnings cleaned by Just Windows, a small business based in San Jose.
The awning cleaning will occur Oct. 2026, followed by window washing and steam cleaning of sidewalks the week after. All work will take place from 4 to 10 a.m.
About 70 businesses had their windows washed by the town last year, said Tom Theobald, streetscape project manager. Because work on Santa Cruz Avenue was extended from Main Street all the way to Highway 9 this year, more than 100 businesses will be included in the 2003 cleaning campaign.
Some merchants along Santa Cruz Avenue said they look forward to the cleaning, although they realize it does not make up for the loss of business and inconvenience they've endured.
"I had to clean the shelves constantly because of all the dust coming in," said Deborah Macias, manager of Los Gatos Framing Co.
Donesh Ghiasi of Casa Mia said any gesture of appreciation by the town "is never enough," but in this case, "it's the best they can do. We're happy with it."
