Mullins lead Gatos frosh-soph to big win over Mountain View
By Nick Tuttle
With another strong showing by the young Wildcat defense, the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team topped the Mountain View Spartans 28-0 last Thursday afternoon.

Marty Mullins had two interceptions, including one at the Los Gatos 6-yard line as it looked like the Spartans were about to get into the Wildcat endzone. Moreover, the defense held the Spartans to 32 rushing yards for the entire game.

Mullins' key interception came in the fourth quarter after the Spartans had driven the ball from their own 30 to the Los Gatos 15. He leaped high into the air and snagged a pass that would surely have set up a Mountain View score.

"It was good to go on the road and beat a good Mountain View team," said Los Gatos coach Dale Gustafson. "They played us very tough all the way."

The Gatos offense again showed great balance with 190 yards on the ground and 177 yards through the air. Quarterback Danny Sullivan started hot, completing his first five passes on his way to a 13 for 20 performance.

Los Gatos scored on its first possession of the game on a 1-yard run by A.J. Comeau to cap a seven-play drive. The drive was highlighted by a 46-yard pass from Sullivan to Michael Gault.

In the second quarter, Carlos Alonzo caught a Sullivan pass and drove to the Spartan 20. Gault carried the ball for last 20 yards and a Wildcat score.

Just before half Sullivan again moved the ball through the air with two passes to David Martini, with Martini making a leap over the Mountain View defender to record the touchdown and put the score at 21-0 at half.

Gustafson added,

"I thought Danny [Sullivan] threw the ball well from the start, which really set the tempo for the game," said Gustafson. "Our offensive line gave him a lot of time to throw the ball."

The final Gatos score came after a punt block by Alonzo gave the Cats good field position. It came off of a third and 11 play from the Spartan 13-yard line. After making a good fake, Sullivan threw a screen pass to Comeau, who ran 13 tough yards into the Spartan endzone.

The Wildcats will now face Saratoga on Nov. 7, 5:15 p.m., at Helm Field in Los Gatos.
