Gatos girls third in CCS, advance to state meet
By Dick Sparrer
Alicia Follmar could have won just about the title in four of the five divisions at the Central Coast Section cross country finals last Saturday. Unfortunately, the Saratoga junior runs in the same division as Presentation senior sensations Melissa Grelli.

Grelli covered the 2.95mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont in 17:55 to win the CCS Division III championship. In the process, the talented senior star posted the best girls time of the day.

Follmar gave Grelli a run for her money, finishing 18 seconds back in 18:13. Her time was also better than any time recorded in girls competition at CCS.

While Grelli set the pace for the day with her 17:55, Marie Nguyen of Milpitas won Division I in 18:26, Tori Tyler of Gunn took Division II in 18:44, Stephanie Hamilton of San Lorenzo Valley was tops in Division IV in 18:59 and Tomi Amos of Castilleja was first in Division V in 18:53.

In boys competition, Jeremy Mineau of Menlo Atherton set the pace with his Division Iwinning time of 15:03. Monta Vista junior Jason Yow was second in the division in 15:30.

Rounding out the list of boys winners were Kyle Shackleton of Carlmont (Division II, 15:35), Nathan Huerta of North Monterey (Division III, 15:39), Alex Dunn of San Lorenzo Valley (Division IV, 15:04) and Jack Welch of Redwood Christian (Division V, 15:30).

Los Gatos came through with strong team showings at CCS. The Wildcats were third in girls action and fourth in boys competition in Division II.

Aptos won the girls Division II crown with 54 points. Mitty was second at 92 with Los Gatos a close third at 101 and Gunn fourth.

"Where we beat Gunn was in our pack," said Los Gatos coach Monica Townsend. "They were really running in a good pack."

Sophomore Ariana Nicewonger was eighth in 20:00 to lead the Gatos effort in the meet. Freshman Samantha Peppard run 23rd in 20:52 with soph Jacqui Kemp 25th in 20:57, senior Shana Ravel 26th in 20:59 and freshman Jill Goodwin 31st in 21:07. Only 1:07 separated the top five runners for Gatos.

The Wildcats qualified for a berth in the Nov. 29 state meet at Woodward Park in Fresno with the third-place finish.

Freshman sensation Matthew Petrillo finished 20th in 16:56 to lead the Gatos boys to a team fourth. Carlmont was the team champ with 51 points, followed by Gunn at 60, Serra at 77 and Los Gatos at 148.

Senior Greg Geldman was 27th in 17:10 with senior Nathan Young 32nd in 17:17, freshman Jimmy Jatho 34th in 17:19 and sophomore Don Gaspar 45th in 17:34.

The Los Gatos boys had won the title in the De Anza Division of the Santa Valley Athletic League a week earlier, outrunning league favorite Monta Vista to the title.

"We thought it was going to be a close race between us and Monta Vista," said Los Gatos coach Tom Newman. "They gave us a little bit of a scare when most of their team was leading the race going into the second mile. The Wildcats remained cool for the first half of the race, then came back with some power to win it."

Petrillo, Geldman and Jatho finished strong to lead the Cats to the team title. Petrillo was fourth in 16:36.6 on the 2.95-mile course with Geldman fifth in 16?38.6 and Jatho sixth in 16:46.3.

Young ended up 10th in 17:06 with Sean Bardes 14th in 17:16.2, Gaspar 18th in 17:33 and Tyler DeSantis 22nd in 17:41.

"This team really came together and these guys really wanted it," said Newman. "They have all put in a lot of work throughout the season and it's just starting to pay off."

Sophomore Seth Smart was second in 17:32.4 and freshman Matt Snee was fourth in 18:17 to lead the Los Gatos boys frosh-soph team to a second-place finish at the league meet. Kai Hayashi was seventh in 18:31 with Jon Berthet 10th in18:41 and Jake Impey 44th in 21:29.

Sophomore Sam Robinson was 14th in 17:16 and soph Alex Henry was 26th in 19:58 to lead the Los Gatos junior varsity boys to a league third.
