It could be just like old times.
At least, that's what the Los Gatos and St. Francis field hockey teams are hoping for this week as they head into the Central Coast Section semifinals.
The Wildcats and Lancers have played for the CCS title in each of the past two seasons—St. Francis winning in 2001 and Los Gatos winning in 2002. And they both hope to be back on the Los Gatos field on Nov. 22 to decide another CCS championship.
To do that, though, both powerhouses have to bring home a semi-final win on Nov. 18. The Lancers, 15-2 for the year following a lopsided 6-0 win over Gilroy on Saturday, must beat Mitty, 11-3-3 after beating Leigh on penalty strokes, at 1 p.m., and the Wildcats, 16-1-1 after pounding Westmont 8-1, must knock off Monta Vista, 13-4-1 after edging Saratoga 1-0, at 2:45 p.m.
With a win on Tuesday, Los Gatos would be chasing a sixth CCS crown. The Wildcats have won section titles in 1993, '95, '98, '99 and 2002.
Los Gatos earned its place in the semifinals with a convincing 8-1 victory over Westmont last weekend on the LG field.
Senior standout Alison Reyes pumped in three goals to lead the Cats to the victory. Senior Sarah Yuki added two goals and an assist and junior Alex Oyer had two goals.
Senior Courtney Furia finished the day with three assists for the Wildcats and senior Jodi Christiansen and junior Bailey Richardson added one apiece.
Robin Rector is the only other senior on the junior-dominated Los Gatos team this fall. Goalie Nicole Wasserman, Richardson and Oyer top a list of 15 juniors on the Gatos squad.
Girls golf
The Los Gatos girls golf team combined for a low 482 to tie for seventh place in the team standings at the Northern California golf championships played in Stockton last week.
St. Ignatius won the team title with 448 strokes. Gatos tied Pleasant Valley for seventh.
Monika Walker led the Cats by firing a 92 on the par-72 course. Jayne Pimentel was close behind with a 93 and Melanie Supler was right there with a 94. Melanie Matsuo finished with a 99, Allison Williams shot a 104 and Heather Arnold carded a 111.
Girls tennis
The Los Gatos girls tennis team opened the CCS team championship with a 4-3 win over Castilleja, but the Wildcats lost 4-3 to St. Ignatius a day later to face elimination from the tournament.
The Wildcats finished the year with a 9-8 season record.
Girls volleyball
Senior Caroline Walters hammered down seven kills apiece to lead the Los Gatos girls volleyball team to a 25-10, 25-12, 25-10 win over Leigh in the CCS Division II playoffs.
The Wildcats, 31-4 for the year, will now advance to the CCS semifinals against Aptos (24-4) on Nov. 19, 6 p.m., at Leland. The winner will face the Leland (26-3)-Mitty (28-3) winner for the section championship on Nov. 22 at West Valley College in Saratoga.
