Calvin Hawkes was a champion and Geoff Doss, Robbie Nakata and Jack Chang each placed second to lead the Fisher Middle School wrestling team to a fourth-place finish in the 16-team Mid-Cal Tournament.
Hawkes won a title at 102 pounds to top a list of eight Fisher medalists in the tournament. Doss (112 pounds), Nakata (157) and Chang (177) were each second, Jeff Pepper (127) and Jack Kramer (117) placed third, Kiko Alonso (137) was fifth and Jack Hogan (72) was sixth.
Nakata and Josh Curtis came back with clutch pins to lead Fisher to a lopsided 62-9 league win over Redwood Middle School later in the week. The Fisher junior varsity won 75-6 the same day.
Fisher had opened the league season with a 78-15 win over Union. Kyle McLean was the wrestler of the match for the locals. Ben Karin led the junior varsity to a 63-12 win.
Doss, Nakata, Jermel Ladd, A.J. Luft and Nick Kalpin each had big wins for Fisher in a 72-18 win over Dartmouth. The JVs won 61-0.
The Mav/Cat Invitational Tournament, Fisher rolled to a second-place finish with Hawkes, Curtis, Kalpin, Nakata and Gurbaksh Sohol going undefeated in the dual-match tourney. Doss, Chang, McLean, Sean Goodison and Karl Winkelman also recorded key wins.
