Fisher wins tourney, dual matches
Pins by team captains Geoff Doss, Josh Curtis and Nick Kalpin sparked the Fisher Middle School wrestling team to a thrilling 42-39 win over Hyde Middle School in the rugged Hyde Classic Team Tournament on Nov. 22.
Doss, Curtis, Kalpin and Karl Winkelman were all named most valuable players in the tournament after leading Fisher to the team championship in the tourney considered to be among the best around.
Fisher opened with wins over Sunnyvale and Willow Glen before beating Hyde. The Trojans came back with a 60-15 win over Kennedy in the tournament finals.
Fisher was coming off of double-victories in regular season competition against Campbell and Rolling Hills. The Trojans ended the league dual match season 6-0 in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions.
The Trojans ended a five-year losing streak with a 63-18 win over Campbell. Curtis, Jeff Pepper, Brett Van Zuiden and Jack Hogan came through with big wins for the varsity and Kevin Hill and Ben Karin had key wins for the JVs in their 66-13 triumph.
Fisher rolled over Rolling Hill 72-10 thanks to key wins by Jack Kramer and Adam Kolander. In JV action, Laura Harmon and Brad Pierce had big wins for Fisher in a 49-12 team victory.
Girls at state
The Los Gatos girls cross country team competed in the state finals on Nov. 27 at Woodward Park in Fresno. The Wildcats, who qualified for the state meet by finishing third in the Central Coast Section Division II finals, ended up 20th in their division in Fresno.
Leading the pack for the Cats was sophomore standout Adriana Nicewonger, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:31. She was following to the finish line by teammates Samantha Peppard (20:39); Jacqui Kemp (20:40); Jill Goodwin (20:53); Shana Ravel (20:53); Ashley Harris (20:59); and Kristy Barker (22:04).
