Marian Stoops

Longtime Los Gatos resident Marian L. Stoops died Dec. 11 at a hospital in San Jose. She was 91.

Stoops was born May 8, 1912, in Aberdeen, Wash. She graduated from Bellingham Normal School, now known as Western Washington University. It was at this school that she also met her future husband, James Stoops.

After residing together in Tacoma, Wash., the couple moved to Los Gatos in 1947. They purchased Metropolitan Laundry and changed the name to Los Gatos Kerful Cleaners & Launderers. Stoops operated Kerful Cleaners for 44 years.

"She really loved Los Gatos. She watched it grow," says Stoops' niece Rebecca Yates. "She was very, very social and knew when to be charming. But she always spoke her mind."

In addition to town activities, Stoops enjoyed traveling, music, and collecting antiques. She is survived by nieces Rebecca Yates of Campbell and Heidi Collivar of Santa Clara; nephews Robert Baila of Denver, Colo., Richard Baila of Bellingham, Wash., and John Baine of San Jose; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; and one great-great nephew.

Maxine Young

Maxine Grace Young died Nov. 15 from natural causes at her home in Reseda, Calif. She was 92.

Born on Feb. 23, 1911, in Oakland, Young lived throughout California and Texas during her life. She worked with the Southern Baptist Ministry for 30 years in Texas and California, and worked for 20 years as an administrative assistant to California State Senator Clark L. Bradley. Upon retirement she founded the Juice Newton Fan Club. A resident of Los Gatos from 1953 to 1987, she is survived by her son, Robert Otha, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Richard Winckler

Richard T. Winckler died Nov. 14 following an accident at his home.

Born in Southern California in 1930, Winckler graduated from Pomona College in 1952. The year prior to receiving his degree in mathematics, he married his longtime girlfriend, Barbara.

Upon graduation Winckler entered the military, serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army infantry. After his service was complete, he went back to school at UC-Berkeley, earning an engineering degree in 1956. The degree led him to a job with IBM, where he worked until 1985.

In 1983 Winckler joined the Los Gatos Rotary Club. He was named Outstanding Rotarian for 2001, chaired the Rotary's Great Race, and served on its scholarship committee. He was also an active member of the Los Gatos United Methodist Church, and worked with the Second Harvest Food Bank.

When not traveling or participating in local events, Winckler and his wife spent time at their second home at Lake Tahoe. He is survived by his wife, daughters Lynda and Karen, sons-in-law Chuck and Greg, and four grandchildren.

Aimee Gill

Former Los Gatos resident Aimee R. Gill died at her home in Grass Valley, Calif., on Nov. 4. She was 81.

Born on Feb. 3, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Gill was a resident of Los Gatos for 30 years and taught at the Chandler Tripp School in San Jose for 32 years. She enjoyed continued education, gardening, reading, pets and crafts, and art.

She is survived by daughters Pamela Gill of Fairplay, Colo., Katherine Fretwell of Auburn, Calif., and Jennifer Lang of Springfield, Ore., and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the AIDS Foundation of Grass Valley.
