Police believe suspects who held up two Los Gatos banks last week might be responsible for other bank robberies around the Bay Area.
Both a Washington Mutual and a Downey Savings were robbed Dec. 16. Authorities do not believe the crimes were connected.
Cooperation and sharing information across Bay Area police agencies have helped to classify the suspects as "serial robbers," said Sgt. Joe DePrima, who is with the Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Department. Surveillance video images of the suspects from both banks are similar to those from previous robberies.
Police responded to the robbery at the Washington Mutual branch on N. Santa Cruz Avenue just before noon, where a male suspect, who indicated he had a gun in his pocket, handed a note to a teller demanding money.
The teller gave the suspect $2,840 in cash before he left the scene. No one was injured.
Later that day, police responded to another bank robbery at the Downey Savings Bank on Blossom Hill Road. A male suspect approached a teller and handed her a note announcing that it was a robbery.
The suspect fled with an undetermined amount of cash.
Police are currently looking for both suspects. The suspect in the first robbery is described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet 3 inches or taller, in his late 20s to early 30s, wearing a gray sweatshirt and dark pants. In the second case, the suspect is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, about 185 pounds, with a mustache and goatee, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap with a logo on the front.
Anyone with information about the Washington Mutual robbery is asked to contact Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Det. Steve Walpole at 408.354.6825; for Downey Savings, contact Los GatosMonte Sereno police detective John Campos at 408.354.6825.
