Christmas Tree Elegance
Photographs by Doug Cody
Valle Monte League ushered in the holiday season with its annual Christmas Tree Elegance Dec. 25 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Spectacular designer Christmas trees provided the backdrop for a series of events that included a children's party, holiday office parties, teas and a champagne brunch and concluded with the grand ball and auction, shown here. Although final fundraising results are not yet completed, members believe they matched or exceeded last year's $465,000 for local mental health agencies.

Steinbeck Center opening
Photographs by Doug Cody
The Log from the Sea of Cortez, the collaboration between John Steinbeck and his friend "Doc" Rickets, was the focus at the Dec. 4 opening of the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies in the new Martin Luther King Jr. Library. Several Steinbeck scholars spoke, and special guest was Thomas Steinbeck, author of Down to a Soundless Sea. The center is on the library's fifth floor.
