Basketball win for LG boys, but girls lose to Homestead
By Dick Sparrer
It was a good start for the Los Gatos boys basketball team last week, but the same can't be said for the Gatos girls.

The boys opened up play in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a 41-35 win over Homestead, but the girls lost a tough 50-37 nod to the Mustangs, a team picked as a title favorite in the division this winter.

Jessica Norvelle pitched in 15 points, but it wasn't enough for the Gatos girls against Homestead. Norvelle had a three-pointer among her three field goals and she added eight points at the free-throw line.

Katy McClenathan supported with seven points, including a three, and Bailey Richardson and Madeline Rose added four points apiece. Diane Carr, Jenny Tighe and Desiree McEntee hit two points each and Monica Thomas had one.

The Cats did a good job of holding New Mexico State-bound Mandy Wald to just nine points, pushing her into first-half foul trouble, but the Mustangs put together a balanced scoring attack to claim the win. Homestead improved to 2-0 in league and 14-4 for the year while Gatos slipped to 0-1 and 9-5.

The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, pulled away in the fourth quarter to claim a 41-35 win over the Mustangs. Vince Bellotti led the Cats with 12 points and Mike Robards had nine. Ted Hull added eight points in the win and Jordan Vandenberg had six.
