Los Gatos residents struggling to decide on the best way to lose weight now have one more option to consider. The Los Gatos Planning Commission recently approved a new fitness facility for women, specializing in circuit training, weight management and lifestyle options.
The proposed Slender Lady center met with resistance from the owner of a similar facility already in Los Gatos. Speaking at the Jan. 14 planning commission meeting, Darlene DeMaestri, owner of Curves, asked the commission to deny the application. DeMaestri argued that her business faced stiff competition from larger chains such as Pinnacle Fitness, and from an increasing number of smaller gyms.
"I'm just wondering at what point does the market get so saturated that those of us with our foot in the door stop doing well," she said.
Although the Los Gatos Town Council recently passed a moratorium on personal-service businesses, the ban does not apply to gyms, which the town considers under the category of a "school." Planning commission members also noted that they do not consider factors like increased competition in reaching their decisions.
Planning commission members unanimously approved the application.
Also approved on Jan. 14 was a housing development project at Shannon and Hicks roads. The Greenbriar Land Company received unanimous architectural and site approval to build 14 homes at the site, although commission members directed staff to look at ways of making the development less conspicuous.
