When the Measure B bond was passed by voters in 1998, $79 million was committed to construction projects within the Los GatosSaratoga Joint Union High School District.
But the funding could only be used for buildings, and not the furniture, equipment and technology necessary to outfit the classrooms. That's where the New Millennium Foundation comes in.
The Los Gatos High School NMF is a nonprofit organization founded by parents, teachers and administrators for the purpose of raising funds to enhance the educational environment for students in every area of campus life. And for the third year, NMF member Steve Murphy, who serves as the grant oversight committee chairman, said, the foundation will be giving back to the school, in the form of fulfilling more than $105,000 in grant requests from teachers.
"It's for things above and beyond what the bond money can be used for," said Los Gatos High School Principal Trudy McCulloch. "And it's very generous."
Murphy said this year the math department will receive the largest chunk of the funds. Members of the department are in the process of moving into a newly constructed building, next to the administration wing. The grant, plus an additional $10,000 from the district, will allow the department to purchase wireless laptop computers, network hubs, and teacher and student computer desks.
"Our goal was to get the math department their equipment, and to get them two math labs that they are outfitting to be up and running by the fall," Murphy said, adding that the math department hasn't received funding from the NMF in the past. "The teachers rely on the NMF for grants so they can outfit their classrooms."
Murphy added that often the larger grants the foundation fulfills are technology-driven, giving instructors the ability to teach their students differently or better than they have in the past.
