Planning hears hospital plan, but commission is asking for more
By Nisha Ramachandran
The Los Gatos Planning Commission tabled discussion over a proposed expansion of Community Hospital of Los Gatos and has asked the applicant to return to the commission next month with a more comprehensive plan.

Representatives of Community Hospital asked the commission on Jan. 28 to approve a master plan for the facility, as well as phase one of a three-stage development process. The proposed expansion calls for almost $52 million worth of renovations to the hospital, including expanding treatment facilities as well as parking.

Planning commission members wanted to hear more details regarding the timing of different construction projects as well as landscaping plans from the hospital before making a final recommendation.

A handful of residents attended the meeting to draw the commission's attention to traffic issues in the neighborhood. Community Hospital is located in a residential area on the north side of Los Gatos on Pollard Road. Inadequate parking at the hospital pushes many patients and employees out to the surrounding streets, where they park on W. Parr Avenue.

"If we're going to do this expansion, where are all the construction trucks going to park?" asked Gary Cassetta, who lives across from the hospital. Cassetta said that he often finds trucks and cars blocking his driveway and impeding his ability to pull his car out of his garage.

Many residents were also concerned that they would not be included in the public dialogue during the hospital's expansion. Although the hospital is in Los Gatos, many of its neighbors live in Campbell. Residents in Campbell said they didn't receive any notification of the Jan. 28 planning commission meeting and urged both the hospital and the town of Los Gatos to start working with the city of Campbell on this matter.

"I beg you to start a dialogue with Campbell," said Cassetta.

The hospital is scheduled to appear before the planning commission again on March 10.

The next planning commission meeting will take place Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in council chambers, 110 E. Main St.
