Events help educate voters in Los Gatos

The League of Women Voters of Santa Clara County and The 55+ Program present two events to help voters understand issues and candidates in the upcoming March election. Representatives from the league will discuss the pros and cons of the various ballot initiatives on Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. The league will also host a forum for candidates running for the 21st District State Assembly seat Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Both events will be held at the Los Gatos Neighborhood Center, 208 E. Main St. in Los Gatos. For more information, call The 55+ Program at 408.354.2360.

Commissioners appointed to town boards

The Los Gatos Town Council appointed new members on Feb. 2 to fill several vacancies on different commissions. Among the new appointees was Thomas P. O'Donnell, who will replace former commissioner Paul DuBois on the planning commission. O'Donnell is a lawyer at Ferrari Ottoboni LLP and has lived in Los Gatos for more than 32 years.

Planning Commissioner Joanne Talsefore was reappointed to the board. Other appointees by the council last week include Jessica Scheiner to the community service commission and Tim Boyd to the transportation and parking commission.

In a separate motion, the council also voted to appoint Rachel Berkowitz as a student representative on the community service commission. Berkowitz is a student at Los Gatos High School.

Traffic calming gets approval from council

Speeding on Johnson Avenue? Not anymore. The Los Gatos Town Council unanimously voted Feb. 2 to approve permanent speed bumps on the street. A study of the area last year showed that the measures reduced the speed but not the flow of traffic through the area. The speed bumps were installed in December 2002 as a trial action. Residents voted to make the speed bumps permanent in November. Seventy-four percent of residents were in favor of the proposal, while 26 percent opposed the measure.
