Two Del Mar High School students were injured last week during an illegal streetcar race in Los Gatos, according to the Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Department.
The accident occurred on Blossom Hill Road late on Feb. 5, as two cars raced each other down the street. Both vehicles were traveling at high speeds when the driver of one car lost control. The vehicle knocked over 130 feet of fence line before it came to a stop on its side, trapping the passengers inside the car. The fire department had cut the roof of the car to free two of the three occupants.
The victims were all Del Mar High School students. The driver, Jeremy Celaya, 18, of San Jose sustained major injuries as did an unidentified 16-year-old female passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Both victims were taken to Valley Medical Center.
A spokesperson for Valley Medical Center said that Celaya was in fair condition the day after the accident. She could not release any information regarding the condition of the second passenger.
A third passenger sustained minor injuries and was taken to Stanford Medical Center.
Street racing is relatively unusual in Los Gatos, said Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Sargent Joe DePrima.
"We haven't noticed any kind of problems with street racing," he said. "We think this is one of those spontaneous moments when the two drivers just saw each other."
Police are looking for the second vehicle involved in the race, believed to be a white or light colored Honda with a neon license plate frame and a rear spoiler. Anyone with more information regarding the accident or the second vehicle is asked to contact Los GatosMonte Sereno Officer David Gregg at 354-8600.
