Wildcats unload for lopsided 6-0 girls soccer win over Cupertino
By Dick Sparrer
It took a while for the Los Gatos High School girls soccer players to get going last Thursday, but when they did, they really got on a roll and coasted to a 6-0 win over Cupertino.

The win helped Gatos improve to 6-2-3 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 10-4-3 for the year.

The Cats didn't score until the 33rd minute of play, and it took an "own goal" by the Pioneers to get Los Gatos on the scoreboard. But then the floodgates opened.

Melissa Shawhan was credited with the score on the "own goal," then 12 minutes later Sofie Lynn scored off a Carrie Gordon assist. It took Gordon only two minutes to score again, this one unassisted. In the 47th minute.

Three minutes later Lynn scored one more, this time off an assist from Jacqui Kemps.

Ashley Dix scored off an assist from Brittany Shand in the 66th minute, and Shand scored off a Dix assist in the 79th minute.

Earlier in the week, Los Gatos had to settle for a 1-1 tie against Los Altos. The teams came out of the game with matching 5-2-3 league records.

Passes from Katie Bonadies and Dix set up Stephanie Clark for the game's first goal in the 55th minute, but Los Altos scored just six minutes later to tie it, and that's how things would wind up.

The Los Gatos girls junior varsity team clinched the league championship with a 1-0 win over Los Altos. The Wildcats came back to blank Cupertino later in the week and are 11-0 in league play.

The Wildcats were to close out the regular season on the road this week with a 3:30 p.m. game at Saratoga on Feb. 10, 3:30 p.m. The Falcons are 4-3-4 in the division and 11-4-4 for the year after losing 2-1 to Gunn and tying Palo Alto 0-0 last week. Paly leads the division with an 8-1-1 record.

Boys soccer

The Los Gatos boys soccer team was blanked 2-0 by Fremont last week. The boys, like the girls, finish off the regular season on Feb. 10, but the Cats are at home against Santa Clara at 3:30 p.m.
