Basketball team needs wins to make the CCS playoffs
By Dick Sparrer
It takes a .500 record for a high school basketball team to get to the Central Coast Section playoffs. And the Los Gatos Wildcats have their work cut out for themselves this week if they have any hopes of getting to the postseason.

The Los Gatos boys dropped two decision last week, falling 46-40 to Fremont and 61-40 to Milpitas, to slip to 4-6 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic and to 10-14 for the year.

With just two games remaining, the Cats have no hope of getting to .500 for the year, but they can finish the league season at .500 with wins over Wilcox and Palo Alto this week.

The Wildcats should have little trouble getting one of the two wins when they host winless Wilcox on Feb. 18, 7 p.m. Friday night's game, however, could be another story.

The Cats host first-place Palo Alto (10-1) on Feb. 20, and they'll need a victory in the 7:30 p.m. game to get into the postseason. Paly shares the league lead with Milpitas heading into the final week of the regular season.

Los Gatos lost to Milpitas last Friday night, but it was the loss to Fremont earlier in the week that was really the backbreaker for the Wildcats.

Gatos and Fremont entered the Feb. 10 game with matching 4-4 league records. But the Firebirds battled back from a five-point halftime deficit to tie the game 36-36 by the end of the third quarter, then outscored the Cats 10-4 in the fourth.

Vince Belloti was the only Wildcat to score in double digits in the game, hitting five field goals to finish with 10 points. Senior Mike Robards supported with seven points and Jordan Vandenberg and Chris Cuthbert tossed in six apiece. Matt Martini added five points, Ted Hull four and Michael Brienzo two.

Later in the week, Los Gatos battled Milpitas to a 16-16 after a period, but the Trojans outscored the Cats in every other period on the road to the 21-point win. Milpitas canned eight three-pointers in the win and Gatos had none.

Vandenberg led the Cats with 11 points. Martini and Robards dropped six apiece, Belloti had five and Cuthbert and Hull hit four each.
