Pease pins another CCS mat crown

Bobby Pease needs one more pin this season. Now, you'd think the Los Gatos senior would be satisfied with what he's accomplished already this year. After all, he pinned five times last weekend at the Central Coast Section wrestling championships to win the 152-pound championship.

He now has 30 pins for the year, more than any other wrestler in Los Gatos High School history—except one.

Guy Greene also had 30 pins, and now the two share the school record for most pins in a season ... a record that Greene set in 1969.

Pease has one more shot at getting a pin—when he competes in the California State Tournament on March 56 in Bakersfield.

"If he gets one there, he'll set a record that's stood since 1969," said Los Gatos coach Scott Downs. "And that's a long time for a record to stand."

Downs should know. He was Greene's teammate on that 1969 team that won league and CCS championships.

Pease will go after that record at the state meet, and Greene will likely be there to watch him do it. The former Gatos mat star is now the head wrestling coach at Simi Valley High School in Southern California.

Pease pinned four of five times at CCS to win a title last year, but he went that one better last weekend when he pinned all five of his opponents before getting to the third round. In the finals, he pinned Zac Taylor of James Lick 54 seconds into the second round.

"The kid he wrestled in the finals was very tough," said Downs. "He went after Bobby."

"But what he's done different this year is that when he gets into a scramble," said Downs of Pease, "he turns the scramble into a pinning situation."

He did just that in the finals, pinning in the second round to complete a clean sweep of the 152-pound division.

Pease opened by pinning Adolfo Gonzalez of Alisal at 1:37 of the first round, then pinned Drew Frampton of Santa Cruz at 3:20 of the second, Daniel Brereton of Valley Christian at 1:53 of the first and Rudy Herrera of Silver Creek at 1:46 of the first.

"He wrestled great," said Downs.

Pease will now take a 42-5 season record on to the state meet in Bakersfield. He'll be joined on the trip by teammate Ivan Batinich, who finished second at 189 pounds at CCS.

Batinich won his first four matches to get into the finals, but lost 5-1 to Brent Walter of Saratoga in the championship round.

The Gatos senior pinned Jose Alvarez of Alvarez High School at 1:36 of the first round in his first match, but that was his only win by fall in the tournament. He beat Scott McLaughlin of Terra Nova 7-1, Jose Linares of Greenfield 6-4 and Dean Antolin of Westmont 8-6.

"He has the potential to medal at state," said Downs of Batinich. He'll take a 36-10 record to the tournament.

Jake Schonig was fifth at 103 pounds and Nolan Nguyen at 125 and Mike Ross at 140 each placed sixth at CCS for the Wildcats, but only the top three in each weight class advance to state.

Los Gatos ended up third overall in the team standings at the CCS tourney behind Gilroy and Fremont. The Mustangs won the tourney with a resounding 211.5 points. The Firebirds were second at 139 with the Wildcats third at 129.5, San Benito fourth at 126 and Bellarmine fifth at 122.

The Cats had been hoping they had a shot at catching Gilroy in the run for the tournament title, but they were realistically pointing at second place. Fremont had other ideas.

"They have a great tournament team," said Downs of Fremont. "In a tournament like this, the more studs you have who can go further, the better you'll do. And they did. You've got to give them credit."

"We didn't wrestle well the first day, and we had to," said Downs. "But we wrestled great the second day."

Ten Wildcats made it to the second day of the tournament. Along with placers Pease, Batinich, Schonig, Nguyen and Ross, Cats making it to the second day included Dylan Gavin (112), Matt Miguel (130), Bashir Olangian (135), David Bitter (145) and Eric Chen (171).

"Our goal was to get 12 [to the second day]," said Downs. "We knew we could challenge for this thing, but we had to have a good first day. We didn't have a good first day."

Still, the Cats finished third in the CCS team standings, and only two Los Gatos teams have done better. The 1969 squad won the section championship and the 2003 team finished second. Los Gatos has finished third in 1968, 2002 and now 2004.

"This was one of the best tournaments in school history, a Wall of Fame year," said Downs, referring to the wall of the Gatos wrestling room that features stars through the years in the program. "We've got to keep that in perspective."

Schonig, just a juniors, posted a 5-2 record to claim fifth place at 103 pounds.

"He wrestled tough, as good as I've ever seen him wrestle," said Downs. "He really had a warrior mentality."

Schonig pinned Robby Cortez of Monterey at 1:25 of the first round in his first match before beating Anthony Mendez of Willow Glen 11-2. He lost 6-4 to Parker Sha of Terra Nova to fall into the consolation bracket, but battling back to beat Alan Chen of Saratoga 12-0 and Robert Lopez of Westmont. After a loss to Andre Gonzalez of Evergreen Valley, he handled Sergio Valdez of South San Francisco 8-1 in the fifth-place match.

Nguyen came through with a sixth at 125 pounds, posting a 6-2 tourney record.

"He's been a leader for us all year," said Downs of Nguyen. "He lost early and battled his way back."

Ross nailed a 3-3 record on his way to a sixth-place finish at 140.

"It's the best he's wrestled in four years," said Downs of Ross. "He did everything we could ask of a senior yesterday."

Gavin, just a sophomore, posted a 2-2 mark with a pin at 112 pounds and "wrestled well for us," said Downs. And Olangian was 2-2 at 135 after facing the No. 1 seed in his first match. "He wrestled as well as I've seen him wrestle," added the coach.

Miguel, Bitter and Chen each posted 2-2 records on their way to the second day.
