Locals Lepold, DiNapoli stab national honors in fencing
By Dick Sparrer
Joshua Lepold was a long way from home last month. In fact, the 16-year-old was about as far away from Los Gatos as you can get.

The Los Gatos High School juniors was one of ten foil fencers from the United States selected to compete in the Cadet Foil World Cup tournament in early February in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Lepold earned the right to compete in Russia by posting a ranking of No. 7 in the men's foil cadet (under 17) age group.

In other local fencing news, Emerson DiNapoli of Los Gatos finished 25th in a field of 132 fencers at the U.S. Fencing Association's North American Cup tournament held in San Jose.

DiNapoli, 17, was 25th in the men's under 19 foil event and 28th out 163 fencers in the Division I (open) men's foil event. He is ranked 24th nationally in the under 19 foil and 46th nationally in the open) foil.

Quite a pair

The Courtside Tennis Club team of Brian Brogan and Ken Kao is the No. 1-ranked boys 16 doubles team in the United States. Kao, of Monta Vista, and Brogan, of Los Gatos, were also named as high school All-Americans. Other Courtside rankings include Jay Wong of Cupertino, No. 2 in boys 16 singles with Kao No. 23 and Stephen Stege No. 41; Jeff Gast of Saratoga No. 7 in boys 14 singles; and Phillip Kao of Cupertino No. 38 in boys 18 singles.

Gutman has balance

Hayley Gutman of Monte Sereno, a graduate of Los Gatos High School, finished first on the balance beam to help the Cornell University women's gymnastics team win the Big Red Invitational.

Gutman, the daughter of Jeff and Mimi Gutman, nailed a 9.7 on the beam. The freshman human ecology major is a level 10 competition for the West Valley Gymnastics Club.
