Los Gatos opens league tennis season with back-to-back wins
By Dick Sparrer
It's not often that a Monta Vista tennis team starts out the league season with back-to-back losses. But thanks to Los Gatos and Saratoga, the Matadors are 0-2 after the first week of action in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats edged the Matadors 4-3 on March 4, two days after the Falcons had beaten the Mats by the same score.

Los Gatos swept Monta Vista in doubles play to pull out the thrilling victory. The win helped the Wildcats improve to 2-0 in league play and to 7-1 for the season.

Senior Lee Gerston teamed with senior Tin Tran to nail a tough three-set win over Monta Vista at No. 1 doubles. The Gatos pair took the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

It didn't get any easier at No. 3 doubles. Senior Drew Froehlich joined with senior Greg Thaler for an exciting 6-0, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2 three-set win.

James Lok and Matthew Solomon, a couple of seniors at No. 2 doubles, won easily 6-1, 6-1.

Los Gatos won just one of four matches in singles play, but it turned out to be enough for the Wildcats. Senior Chase Huebner posted an exciting 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 singles.

Junior Brian Brogan lost a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 heartbreaker to Ken Kao at No. 1 singles. The two net stars are very familiar with one another's style since they are doubles partners at the Courtside Tennis Club and are ranked No. 1 in the nation in boys 16 doubles.

The Wildcats had opened the week with a lopsided 6-1 win over Mountain View in the league opener for each squad. Brogan won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Huebner won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 and Solomon won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

Gerston and Tran combined for a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, Froehlich and Lok won 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 and sophomore Patrick Brogan and senior Tim Switzer won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.

Los Gatos had opened the season with a 5-2 win over Bellarmine. Huebner and senior Jon Teel won in singles play and Gatos swept in doubles action with Gerston and Tran, Thaler and Froehlich and Solomon and Switzer each winning.

The Wildcats will be back at it this week when they host Lynbrook on March 9 and Palo Alto on March 11 in a couple of 3 p.m. league matches.
