Flu makes Los Gatos tennis coach more than a little sick

The flu made Los Gatos tennis coach Todd Dissly feel a little sick last week—not because he was stricken with a case illness, but because some of his tennis players were.

Los Gatos opened play last week with a 5-2 win over Lynbrook, but the Wildcats lost 5-2 later in the week when they were bitten by the flu-bug and by Palo Alto.

"We were missing three starters due to flu," said Dissly. "We will take revenge on them later in the season."

For now, though, the loss dropped the Wildcats to 3-1 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 9-2 for the season. Paly improved to 3-1 in league play with the win and Saratoga is atop the pack at 4-0.

Junior Brian Brogan cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and sophomores Patrick Brogan and Chase Huebner teamed for a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles, but those were the only victories the Cats could manage against the Vikings.

Junior Greg Thaler played tough at No. 2 singles, going three sets before losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, but Gatos lost in straight sets in three other matches and lost by default at No. 4 singles.

Things went much better earlier in the week against the Vikings. B. Brogan rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and sophomore Matthew Solomon won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

Los Gatos swept in doubles play with James Lok and Tin Tran teaming for a 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Thaler and James Moser winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Drew Froehlich and Tim Switzer combining for a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3.

Gatos will try to get back on the winning track this week when the Wildcats visit Leland on March 18, 3:30 p.m., in a non-league match.

Golfers win four

Nat Henry and Sean McNamara have been taking turns. And because of it, the Los Gatos boys golf team is off to a hot start in the 2004 spring season in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Henry was the medalist against Monta Vista and Lynbrook and McNamara won medalist honors against Wilcox and Santa Clara as the Wildcats rolled to four straight wins to start the league campaign.

Henry finished with a 1-over par 35 at the La Rinconada Country Club to lead the Cats to a 199-214 win over Monta Vista, then he matched that effort with another 35 in a 199-219 win over Lynbrook on the same course.

McNamara covered the par-36 Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club in even par to lead the Cats to a 202-219 win over Wilcox, then he came back with a 4-over 38 to drive Los Gatos to a 212-247 win over Santa Clara at La Rinconada.

Volleyball teams roll

Casey Pfeifer dished off 36 assists and Fletcher Anderson hammered home 13 kills to lead the Los Gatos boys volleyball team to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-20 win over Fremont last week.

The win was the first for the Cats in De Anza Division play and stretched their league record to 3-0.

Sam Moisenco supported with nine kills and Keith Catanese had three blocks to go with eight kills. Cody Stewart added six kills and Drew McDowell had six solo blocks. Catanese and Mike Robards played key roles their passes to get the ball to the setter, Pfeifer.

The same night, the Gatos junior varsity topped Fremont 25-5, 25-13

Peter Graham, Dan Norvelle, Blake Benning, Steve Conry, Kris Haushalter and Eric Rowell all had kills and Rowell and Martin Eggers were top setters.

The two squads were to return to the Gatos court on March 16 to host Homestead. The varsity returns to the floor on March 17 at St. Francis and March 20 at the Leland Classic.
