Still confusion
over two school
foundations
It certainly is confusing when most people don't realize our schools are divided into two districts—an elementary district and a high school district. There is further confusion that the elementary school foundation is called the Los Gatos Education Foundation. They have been around for more than 20 years, and the Los Gatos High School New Millennium Foundation was only founded three years ago.
The reason it took so long to start a foundation for the high school is that LGHS is in a joint district with Saratoga High School. Not so long ago, any funds raised in a high school foundation would have to be divided between LGHS and Saratoga High. Now Saratoga has its own foundation and LGHS was allowed to have its own.
The Los Gatos Weekly-Times has tried to help us clear up this confusion, but obviously we have a long way to go.

Paper continues
to slight Union
School District
Your March 17 editorial titled "More than one foundation working for local students" examines the fine work done by www.lgef.org to serve some Los Gatos elementary students. The editorial tries to correct anybody who overlooks www.lghsnmf.org, as it is also a foundation serving Los Gatos High School.
But wait, only two foundations? Once again, the Weekly-Times abandons some of its readers while neatly leaving an impression of completeness. The Union School District Educational Foundation (www.USD-EF.org) also serves elementary school students in Los Gatos. You wouldn't know that when week after week, year after year, the Weekly-Times repeats its myopia by defining Los Gatos as a small fraction of what it really is.
I'm sure the readers will appreciate this reminder about the Union School District Educational Foundation. As for the Weekly-Times, perhaps some newspapers are beyond education.

Under 21 Club's
first event is
a big success
This letter goes out to all those who contributed to the success of the Under 21 Club's first event.
On Sunday, March 14, the Los Gatos Bar & Grill opened its doors to teens from Los Gatos and surrounding communities for our teen nightclub. Without the continual support and encouragement from Mr. Ayer, the manager of the Bar & Grill, our event would never have happened. Kids from Los Gatos, Leigh, Mitty, Saratoga and Westmont high schools were able to listen to music, dance and socialize together, something that rarely happens in our community.
Mr. Ayer provided excellent food and a cool atmosphere, and he and his staff treated everyone with respect. We want to thank Mr. Ayer for all the financial support and having so much faith in us.
A year ago, when the Under 21 Club evolved from Alive ... and Loving Life, we didn't know whether our vision could be realized. Now with the partnering of community leaders, local businesses, parents and other adults, and energetic teens, we learned that anything is possible. Thanks to all of you who helped us make the Under 21 Club a reality. We can hardly wait until our next event.

Cover story
will create
awareness
I read your [March 10 cover story, "Cancer-Free Zone"] with tears in my eyes. In 1967 my mother died from colon cancer. Five years ago my brother was diagnosed with colon cancer and thankfully after surgery he is well and healthy.
However, last year my sister died from this dreadful disease. She didn't have that life-saving colonoscopy done until too late—two months before she died.
You emphasize the fact that we must all be made aware of what a person needs to do to stop this dreadful disease. Colonoscopy, colonoscopy, colonoscopy! Cutting polyps.
I call this disease my family disease. After my sister died, my children in their 40s had a colonoscopy and had polyps clipped from their colon. I have a colonoscopy every other year.
Somehow we must make communities aware of this lifesaving procedure. You, Gay Crawford and the American Cancer Society are our soldiers on the front line in making us all aware of how necessary it is to have this procedure done regularly.
