The names on the perpetual plaque represent a veritable Who's Who of talented seniors who have committed countless weeks, months and even years to making the community a better place to live. And the time is coming up soon to add another name to the Seniors of Distinction plaque that hangs in the Los Gatos Senior Center.
The annual award, cosponsored by The Terraces of Los Gatos and the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, recognizes seniors in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno for their selfless dedication to their communities.
Los Gatos resident Clare Dinno had the honor of seeing her name added to the plaque last year. A longtime volunteer at St. Mary's Church, Dinno received the 2003 Seniors of Distinction award.
Now that she's had a chance to experience what it's like to win the award, she'll be joining a seven-member committee composed of community and sponsor representatives in selecting her successor.
The Seniors of Distinction award is designed to acknowledge seniors for their "outstanding contributions in the community," according to committee chairwoman Pamela Bancroft of The Terraces. The nominee's contributions could be in any area, from sports to art and education.
One of the aspects of giving these awards that Bancroft says she enjoys is hearing stories of how a person can make a difference in another person's life.
"Some of these stories are truly heartwarming," she says. "So many people are busy these days. It's good to know that there are still people out there who love to help others in the community."
Nominations are open to all Los Gatos and Monte Sereno residents ages 65 and over. The winner will be announced at a champagne reception on May 27 at 4:30 p.m. at The Terraces Glenn Rouse Assembly Hall. Mayors Steve Glickman of Los Gatos and Erin Garner of Monte Sereno will present the award.
In addition to the plaque, winners will receive a one-night stay in a deluxe king room at the Hotel Los Gatos and a complimentary appetizer with the purchase of an entree at Kuleto's Los Gatos.
Nomination forms are available at the Los Gatos Town Hall, the Monte Sereno City Hall, the Los Gatos Town Library, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times office, Whole Foods, The Terraces of Los Gatos, The Meadows, the Neighborhood Senior Center and the Chamber of Commerce office.
Forms must be mailed, delivered or faxed to Pamela Bancroft at The Terraces of Los Gatos, 800 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos 95032. The fax number is 408.356.9647. The nomination deadline is May 6, 5 p.m.
