It may have been April 1st, but it was no joke the way the Los Gatos girls track and field team raced to an exciting 67-60 victory over Palo Alto in a key meet in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Ali Dodson won three events and Sally Stanton won a pair to lead the Wildcats to the win over the Vikings.
Dodson starred for the Wildcats, winning the 400 meters in 57.8, the 100 in 12.1 and the 200 in 25.7. Stanton took the 100 hurdles in 16.1 and the 300 hurdles in 48.0.
Samantha Peppard supported with a first in the 800 meters in 2:24.2 with teammate Marlana Shile second in 2:29.8, and Shea Dailor took the discus at 97-4 with Jennifer Davis second at 97-2.
Michelle Johnson soared to a win the high jump at 4-10.
Carolyn Stege was second in the 400 in 60.6 and third in the long jump at 15-9, and other seconds went to Cheryl Parkman in the 100 in 12.3, Jill Goodwin in the 1,600 meters in 5:29, Monica Rude in the 300 hurdles in 49.6, Ariana Nicewonger in the 2-mile in 112:33.8 and Madeline Rose in the shot put at 27-1 with Jenna Bertocci third at 26-1.
The Los Gatos junior varsity won 67-60 the same day behind individual firsts by Kristy Barker (1,600), Sam Mason (400), Jenna Clark (100), Mary Stump (800), Lauren Sitzenstatter (300 hurdles) and Sanishya Fernando (200).
Many of the young Wildcats came back the next night to compete in the Los Gatos Frosh-Soph Classic, and the Gatos girls finished second in the meet for freshman and sophomore competitors.
Goodwin won the 1,600 in a personal best 5:22.17, and Rude took the 300 hurdles in 48.14, another personal best.
Nicewonger posted a personal record with her 11:46.33, good for second in the 2-mile. Barker was eighth in the race, bettering her personal best by 41 seconds to finish in 12:26.48.
Janelle Carino, Mary Gonzales, Monica Heiman and Clark teamed up to finish fifth in the 4x100 relay in 52.19.
Fernando was sixth in the 400 in 63.11 with Ali Rubnitz seventh in 63.96 and Stephanie Girsback eighth in 64.13, and Peppard was sixth in the 800 in 2:21.87. Dana Farrington was ninth in the long jump at 13-3.
Los Gatos had finished 57 points ahead of second-place Aptos to win the team title at the West Valley Relays, an invitational that featured nearly 70 teams.
The Los Gatos 4x400 relay team of Stanton, Benson, Stege and Dodson ran 4:02.1 to finish first overall. The time is the best this season in the Central Coast Section.
Stanton led the Wildcats by running second in the 100 hurdles in a personal best 16.68 and added a second in the pole vault at 10-6.
Johnson flew 5-6 to nail a solid second in the high jump.
"In her second meet of the season she jumped a huge PR in the high jump for second place and second place on the CCS top marks list," said Los Gatos coach Monica Townsend. "This jump with definitely place her in the top 10 in the state as well."
Parkman (200, 27.3), Dodson (200, 26.1), Stege (400, 59.8) and Ashley Benson (800, 2:25.3) ran second in the sprint medley relay in 4:18, good for the fourth best time in the event in Los Gatos history.
Jaimee Erickson ran 17.18 to finish sixth in the 100 hurdles, Dailor was seventh in the discus at 103-9 and Ariana Nicewonger finished eighth in the 3,000.
Goodwin (sixth in 4:59.05) and Peppard (10th in 5:01.24) ran well in the 1,500 meters (the equivalent to the high school mile).
"Incredible freshmen Jill Goodwin and Samantha Peppard ran huge PRs in the 1,500," said Townsend.
Earlier in the year at the Stanford Invitational, Stanton flew to a second in the pole vault at 11-0 and she was 15th in the 100 hurdles in 17.13.
