It will be like a home away from home for the Los Gatos boys volleyball team this when the Wildcats host their annual tournament on April 24.
Because the Cats won't be home for the Gatos tourney, they'll be at Santa Clara University's Leavey Center. The Cats take a 22-2 record into the weekend tourney.
Los Gatos is coming off of a tough loss to state powerhouse Mt. Madonna. The Wildcats lost a close 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 non-league decision on April 13. Keith Catanese, Fletcher Anderson, Brian Register, Mike Robards and Drew McDowell were the kill leaders for the Cats. Setter Casey Pfeifer had 35 assists for the night.
The loss, though, didn't nothing to injure the Wildcats' standing in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Cats are off to an 8-0 start with their most recent win a quick 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Saratoga. McDowell (11) and Catanese (10) were kill leaders.
In tournament play prior to the Saratoga match, Anderson earned a place on the all-tournament team when the Wildcats finished fifth out of 35 teams at the Dos Pueblos Tournament played March 27 in Santa Barbara. The tourney featured many of the state's strongest teams.
In previous action, Los Gatos swept past Mountain View 25-12, 25-12, 25-21 for a league win. Anderson buried 13 kills to lead the Cats, followed by Register with nine, McDowell with six, Sam Moisenco with four, Catanese with three and Register with one.
Junior setter Rob Couchee had 36 assists in the win. Anderson was the night's top server with five aces, and Jesse Barron and Couchee also served well. Anderson also led the squad with 19 digs and Register had 11.
Moisenco had three solo blocks and a block assist at the net, and Catanese and McDowell each added three block assists.
Catanese and Moisenco hammered home 12 kills apiece to lead Gatos to an easy 25-5, 25-12, 25-14 win over Wilcox. Register added nine kills, Travis Register had five and Anderson had four. Barron led the way with seven service aces and Couchee had 43 assists.
Los Gatos had to battle from behind to pull out a four-game win over Fremont. The Cats lost 25-15, but then reeled off three straight wins 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 to top the Firebirds.
Anderson had a sensational night for the Cats with team-high totals in kills (12) and service aces (7), as well as adding a solo block and also passing and digging well.
Catanese added 10 kills for the Wildcats and Robards, Moisenco and Barron also finished among the kill leaders. Catanese and Moisenco also had blocks.
Pfeifer had an impressive 44 assists for the night.
The Los Gatos junior varsity team, meanwhile, boasts a 6-0 league record and 12-0 mark overall after beating Saratoga and winning the South County Classic tournament at Live Oak High School.
The Cats whipped the Falcons 25-8, 25-9 behind the solid play of Eric Rowell, who had 16 assists and six service aces in the match. Pete Graham and Steve Conry had five kills apiece and Frank Fritsch, Dan Norvelle and Kevin Shain added two each.
At the South County Classic, Gatos beat Alisal 25-11, 25-7, Aptos 25-12, 25-12 and Sacred Heart Cathedral 25-18, 25-11 in pool play, then beat Sacred Heart again 25-7, 25-14, Mitty 25-10, 25-21 in the semifinals and Fremont 25-14, 29-27 in the title match.
Conry led the Cats with 10 kills in the championship win. Fritsch added seven, Graham four, Kris Haushalter and Rowell three apiece and Dan Langholff two.
Rowell handed out a team-high 24 assists and Graham finished with three service aces.
Alex Scott, Kevin Shain and Chris Renfer were other key players for the Cats in the tourney.
The Los Gatos JVs will wind up tourney play when they host their own tournament on May 1.
