It was called the "Best of the Best," and Los Gatos golfer Sean McNamara proved to be just that as he led the Wildcats to a team title in a golf tournament that featured many of the top teams in the Central Coast Section.
McNamara fired a blistering 69 to lead the Cats to the championship in the Best of the Best golf tournament at the Coyote Creek Golf Club.
Los Gatos recorded a low 313 strokes to win the championship in the 24-team tournament hosted by Santa Teresa High School. Sacred Heart Cathedral was second at 320 with Pacific Grove third at 325.
McNamara fired an eagle on the par-5 No. 9 hole at Coyote Creek on his way to a three-under par round of 69 to lead all individual finishers. Gordon Bean of North Salinas was second with a 70 and Gerardo S. Loyola of Watsonville was third at 71).
Nat Henry carded a 74 for the Wildcats with Matt Perrone shooting an 84 and Nick Iwamoto an 86.
"Teams were invited to bring their top four varsity golfers," said tourney director Don Yellum of Santa Teresa. "It was meant to bring out the best high school competition for 18 holes, to showcase their skills and show that we do have some top notch players out here."
"It's great to be able to bring a collection of talented high school golfers to a course of Coyote Creek's caliber and see what they can do," added Yellum. "The tournament went off without a hitch and we're looking forward to doing it again next year."
It was the first event of its kind, and Coyote Creek certainly provided a challenging course for the competitors.
