The Boston Red Sox are off to a hot start in the American League race this spring, and they made a statement with a couple of big wins over their rivals, the New York Yankees, to open play last weekend.
Well, their counterparts in the Los Gatos Little League have been making a statement of their own this spring. The Red Sox of the major division are off to a 7-1 start and sit atop the standings in the LGLL American League.
The Sox claiming their seventh win in eight starts with a 1-0 win over the Reds on April 16. Tim Garvey went six innings to toss a shutout for the Red Sox and David Picone knocked in the game-winning run.
Garvey had flipped a shutout for the Sox in a 9-0 win over the Diamondbacks a week earlier, striking out 12 along the way. Picone singled and doubled in the game.
Robbie Dunne went the distance for the D'Backs, striking out 10.
A night earlier, Keith Brassil was 4 for 4 and Garvey had three hits for the Red Sox in a 15-3 win over the Orioles. Garvey, Brendan Crane and Joey Comeau all pitched in the win.
Hayden Hibbard and Bryan Houp pitched for the O's.
Unlike their major league namesake, though, the Red Sox lost to the Yankees in a March 27 game. Gavin Honda belted three hits to lead the Yanks to a 9-8 win over the Sox.
Crane tossed six innings for the Red Sox, striking out 10.
Over in the National League, the Cubs are off to a hot start with a solid 6-1 record.
Josh Yun doubled and singled twice and Tyler Olivet and Devin Coen had two hits apiece to drive in two runs each to lead the Cubs to a 12-2 win over the Tigers on April 17.
Two days earlier, Olivet and Yun each tripled and singled twice and Coen doubled and singled twice for the Cubs in a 15-0 win over the Yankees.
The Cubbies turned back the Cardinals 12-2 on April 4. Jake Cathey was 3 for 3 in the win. Litle and Dylan Lovit had three hits each for the Cards.
Jason Shepardson homered and Alex Hamacher had three hits and two runs scored to help the Reds pin the Cubs with their only loss of the season. The Reds posted a 10-6 victory.
Matt Horton and Nick LaBombarda each singled and doubled to lead the Giants to a 10-1 win over the Astros. The two also pitched their club to the win.
Steven Carlquist, Michael Murano and Jack Fordyce all pitched for the Astros.
Corey Lanagan and Hibbard tossed the Orioles to a 7-2 win over the A's.
Hamacher tossed six strong innings, striking out six, to lead the Reds to an 11-7 win over the Cardinals.
Jeremy Decarvahlo tripled and doubled and Tyler Litle had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Cards at the plate. Carter Krach and Pat Sgerlatta pitched for the Cards
The Reds had edged the Giants 8-6 with Hamacher, Anthony Condos and Shepardson combining to pitch the win. Joey Vizzusi singled, doubled and tripled and Kevin Brogan scored two runs.
Horton, Zach Hershberger, Marshall Finch, LaBombarda and Reed Gunaslus all scored for the Giants in a five-run third.
Shepardson struck out 15 in six innings to lead the Reds to a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Chase Svendson fanned 10 in the losing effort.
Dunne, Jake Raynaud and Patrick Shultz scored key runs to lead the Astros to a 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
Matt Calhoun had two hits and teamed with John Williams and Mike Mitchell to pitch the Tigers to a 12-2 win over the Astros.
Lanagan tossed a complete game shutout for the Orioles in a 17-0 win over the Giants.
Ashan Fernando had three hits and Harry Jordan tripled and singled to lead the Astros to a 7-2 win over the Yankees. Sam Defever tossed a complete game for the Astros.
Ronan Hayes and Ryan Martin each doubled for the Yanks.
Peter Danna struck out seven in pitching the Royals to an 8-3 win over the Cardinals, but his five strikeouts weren't enough in a 5-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Danna had three hits and Kyre Vega and Cody Nez handled the pitching chores for the Royals in a 10-7 win over the A's.
The A's scored all of their runs in a seven-run third when Adam Rose, Jacob Warkov, Ryan Lowe, Marcus Devarona, Andrew Berg, Cory Nakabayashi and Kevin Rose all scored.
The Royals scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning in a 6-3 win over the Yankees.
Warkov had two hits, but the A's lost an 11-3 decision to the Cardinals.
Nick Lamson singled and doubled and Mitchell had two hits for the Tigers in a 9-3 win over the A's.
Berg singled and tripled in the loss.
