Lewicki, Messa flip no-hitters in Los Gatos Pony League wins
By Dick Sparrer
The hitters have been very active in the Los Gatos Pony League this spring, but it was a couple of pitchers taking center stage in league play last week as Patrick Lewicki of the A's and Kevin Messa of the Giants each tossed no-hitters to lead their teams to victories.

Lewicki flipped a no-hitter for the A's in their 4-0 win over the Red Sox on April 21. Right fielder Travis Bonner made a fine catch to help preserve the gem.

Chad Mardesich and Kiko Alonso had two hits apiece to lead the A's offensively and Bonner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

A night later, it was Messa's turn. The Giants hurler struck out 11 in a five-inning no-hitter in his club's 10-0 win over the Cubs. Caleb Larson homered and singled twice in the win and Andrew Gomez had three hits.

Larson tripled home the tying run in the seventh inning, then scored on an error to lead the Giants to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Orioles earlier in the week.

The O's took a 2-0 lead into the sixth before Chris Shelton singled home Geo Shannon in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 2-1. That set the stage for Larson's big hit in the seventh.

In other recent action, Nate Aguiar knocked in Messa with the game-tying run, then scored the go-ahead run to lead the Giants to a 7-3 win over the Red Sox. Messa tripled in the win for the Giants.

Chris Bitter scored on a single by Matt Politti for the Red Sox's first run of the game.

Jarrod Lefton homered and tripled to place the Yankees to a 10-4 win over the Giants. Sam Panvini had two hits and Spencer Haven doubled for the Yanks. Gomez singled and doubled and Shannon had two hits to knock in two runs for the Giants.

Justin Lewis homered and singled twice and Christopher LaBouff ripped a double to lead the Astros to a 4-1 win over the Yankees. Mike Denevi doubled for the Yanks.

The Astros came back to blast the Red Sox 13-3. Nick Kalpin singled, tripled and homered to lead the Astros at the plate. K.C. Silva and David Haskell each doubled and singled twice in the win and Ben Campbell had two hits.

The Cubs and Red Sox played to a 10-10 tie in a game that was suspended because of darkness on April 20.

A double by Brett Labombarda and a three-run homer by Karl Winkleman sparked a five-run first inning rally for the Sox.

The Cubs answered with six runs in the second. Matt Polizzi got the inning started when he reached first, stole second and scored on a double by Jackson Dallas. C.J. Olsen capped the rally with a sac fly.

The Sox picked up three runs in the third to regain the lead, but the Cubs tied it the fourth on a run-scoring single by Olsen.

Brett Litle scored in the sixth to put the Cubs up 9-8, but Michael Shawhan scored to tie it and Labombarda singled home Politti to make it 10-9 heading into the seventh. Labombarda had three hits in the game.

Polizzi got on, then swiped a couple of bases and scored on Dallas' fourth hit of the game to tie it 10-10 in the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, the game was suspended.
