Art Fittinghoff prunes some of the roses on his property, Hester Creek Farms in the Los Gatos mountains. His wife, Ann, runs a special-event floral business. She custom-designs flower arrangements for weddings and special events from the farm's gardens with old-fashioned flowers like David Austin's English roses.

Marjorie Cassel is the loving owner of a garden and home in the Los Gatos mountains. She's getting ready—with the help of a handyman—for visitors who will come from near and far to tour her property as part of the second annual Loma Prieta Community Foundation's spring mountain garden tour and brunch May 8 and 9. Participants will have the opportunity to meander through Cassel's paradise, as well as five other beautiful, blooming mountain gardens.  More

Personal-service Trying to save 4-H Stamp out hunger
Over the objections of landlords and business owners, the Los Gatos Planning Commission recommended regulating personal services such as hair and nail salons.  More Only 9 years old and dressed sharply in his white and green uniform, Joey knows how to attract customers. "Would you like to pet my guinea pig?" he calls out to shoppers outside Gene's Market in Saratoga. As the crowd gathers around his table, he immediately tells them what he really needs: to save 4-H, a youth organization.  More Helping to feed the hungry is as simple as reaching into the cupboard, pulling out some canned goods or jars of peanut butter and leaving them by the mailbox. The only catch is that it must be done on May 8 before the mail arrives.  More
