Denevi, Murphy drive Yanks to Pony League win over Sox
By Dick Sparrer
The Yankees have had their problems with the Red Sox this season—well, maybe in the American League East, but not in the Los Gatos Pony League.

The New York Yanks may have dropped six of seven games to Boston's Sox this spring, but the Yankees of the local Pony League have had a little better success—or at least they did last week.

It wasn't easy, but the Los Gatos Yankees pulled out a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in Pony play.

Mike Denevi ripped a pair of singles and Kevin Murphy smacked a double to lead the Yanks to the one-run win.

The Sox had taken the early lead with two runs in the first, but Kyle Johnson singled in the fourth, stole second and eventually the first run of the game for the Yanks. Denevi scored the tying run.

The Yankees picked up three more runs in the fifth to wrap up the win.

But the Red Sox didn't go down without a fight. Nate Burke doubled and scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4, but the Yanks were able to hang on for the win.

Burke doubled and tripled for the Sox in the game. Chris Walker singled and doubled, Chris Bitter had two hits, Paul Politti tripled and Michael Shawhan and Karl Winkleman each doubled.

The Red Sox rallied for two runs in the first to take the early lead. Bitter singled and scored on Politti's triple. Winkleman's double knocked in Politti to make it 2-0.

The Yanks came back to tie it up, but Burke tripled and scored on a single by Walker to put the Sox back on top 3-2. The Yanks came back with three in the fifth, though, to take the lead for good.

Brett Labombarda started on the hill for the Red Sox, allowing no hits and no runs over the first three innings.

The Yankees came back with a 7-4 win over the Cubs later in the week. Murphy belted two more hits and Sam Panvini singled and doubled.

The Yanks jumped out in front early when Steven Hight scored on single by Murphy. Murphy stole second and third before Panvini doubled him home.

The Yankees added two more runs in the third and one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh on the road to the victory.

C.J. Olsen doubled and singled twice and Brett Litle belted an inside-the-park home run to lead the Cubs. Robbie Comeau singled and doubled and Houston Hibberd doubled.

The Cubs answered with a run in the bottom of the first and scored again in the third.

Comeau singled in the fifth, stole second and scored on a single by Olsen to keep things close, and Litle homered to right in the seventh.

The Yankees had opened the week with a 5-3 win over the Orioles. Cole Meleyco tripled and Greg Walters doubled in the game for the O's.

In other action, Kevin Messa had four hits and Caleb Larson homered for the Giants in a 13-2 win over the A's. Travis Bonner doubled in the loss.

The Giants had beaten the Cubs 12-1 earlier in the week. Larson homered and singled, Coby Dombrowsky had two hits and Geo Shannon doubled in the game. Andrew Gomez tossed a complete game for the mound win.

Olsen and Litle had two hits apiece for the Cubs. Olsen second-inning single knocked in the Cubs' only run. Michael Deloumi, who had singled and swiped second, scored on the hit.

The Cubs came back with a 5-3 win over the Orioles. Olsen doubled twice and singled and Hank Hansen doubled in the win.

The Orioles scored a run in the first to take the quick lead, but the Cubs rallied for four in the third. Olsen ripped a two-run double and Hansen doubled home a run to key the rally.

The Cubs picked up an insurance run in the fifth. Comeau walked and raced to third on a double by Olsen. Hansen drove him home.

The O's made it close with two runs in the sixth. They capped their scoring when Walters doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Fumia.

Walters singled and doubled for the Orioles and Jack Scullion had two hits.

K.C. Silva had three hits, Nick Kalpin drove in two runs with a couple of singles and Mac Jordan doubled to lead the Astros to an 11-9 win over the A's.

Patrick Lewicki tripled and Blake Zamudio and Travis Bonner knocked in three runs apiece for the A's.

The A's took the lead in the game with five runs in the first and four more in the third, but the Astros chipped away with one in the third, two in the fourth and five in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-8.

Jordan doubled in the seventh and Silva singled him home to tie the game. Silva stole second, then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Kalpin.

The Astros added an insurance run in the seventh.
